Israel Elpern .

Israel Elpern, a longtime prop-
onent of the perpetuation of He-
brew, was honored by the Israel
Program Department of the
Jewish Community Center this
week. The occasion was the inau-
gural meeting of the department's
Hebrew lecture-discussion group.
The group adopted a resolution
praising Elpern "who, from the
time of his arrival in Detroit until
this very day, has had as one of his
major goals, the perpetuation of
the Hebrew language in our
midst."
Elpern, a Holocaust survivor,
came to Detroit with his wife,
Paula, in 1947. He was one of the
founders ofKvutza brit, a Hebrew
speakers club and Shaarit Hap-
laytah. He served on the staff of
United Hebrew Schools as a
teacher and a principal until his
retirement in 1977.
Elpern was not able to attend
the meeting. A copy of the resolu-
tion was presented to him in the
hospital. -
