Tel Aviv (JTA) — Defense
Minister Yitzhak Rabin has made
it clear that he is opposed in prin-
ciple to the establishment of
Jewish settlements in the heart of
Arab towns in Judea and Samaria
such as Nablus and Hebron. He
promised a delegation of Knesset
members of the Citizens Rights
Movement (CRM) that no Jewish
settlement will be established on
the controversial site of Tel
Runeida in Hebron unless the
government sanctions it.
He added that he hoped no such
decision will be made. Tel
Rumeida is a hilltop in the middle
of Arab Hebron where Jewish
militants from nearby Kiryat
Araba established themselves
shortly before the Knesset elec-
tions last July — with the ap-
proval of then Defense Minister
Moshe Arens.
The present Labor-Likud coali-
tion government has refused to
allow the settlement to expand.
The West Bank Civil Administra-
tion last week declared Tel
Rumeida an archeological site

GINOPOLIS
which forbids the settlers to erect
permanent housing there.
The settlers themselves are de-
fiant. They claim their settlement
already exists on Tel Rumeida so
their only quarrel with the gov-
ernment is whether it will honor
the decision of the previous
Likud-led regime to allow them to
expand.
At the same time, Rabbi Moshe
Levinger, the Gush Emunim
leader from Hebron, ended his
three-and-a-half month vigil out-
side the Dahaishe refugee camp
near Bethlehem, claiming that
his objectives has been achieved.
Levinger's sit-in was to
dramatize Jewish settler de-
mands for harsher treatment of
Arabs who stone Israeli vehicles
or engage in other acts of violence
on the West Bank. He abandoned
it Monday after a meeting with
Rabin. Levinger said he was as-
sured that significant changes in
the security situation in the terri-
tory were imminent.
Levinger establiShed himself in
a trailer last November at the
entrance to Dahaishe, a frequent
trouble spot. He was visited daily
by his followers and several
clashes occurred with camp resi-
dents. Levinger claimed that he
accomplished what he set out to do
— show the Arabs that Jews will
not tolerate stone-throwing at-
tacks and pressure the security
authorities for stricter law
enforcement in the territory.
But a group of Mapam Young
Guardists, who began a counter-
demonstration outside the
Dahaishe camp last Thursday to
protest what they called Living-
er's deliberate provocation, main-
tained that their presence con-
tributed to his departure. They
also alleged that Levinger was
losing support even among his
own people in the West Bank set-
tlements and that was the main
reason why he decided to leave.
Shortly before his departure, an
Egged bus carrying West Bank
Arab workers to their jobs in Is-
rael was halted by armed masked
gunmen near Abda village. The
driver and passengers were forced
to leave the bus and the vehicle
was set on fire.

Stamps Honor
Hungarian Art
Budapest (JTA) — Hungary
plans to issue postage stamps
featuring objects contained in the
Hungarian Jewish Museum,
marking the first appearance of
stamps on a Jewish subject in the
country's history, the World
Jewish Congress (WJC) reported
last week.
According to the WJC, seven
stamps comprise the series to be
issued by the post office under the
title "Jewish Art in Hungary."
The announcement coincided
with a wreath-laying ceremony at
the memorial wall in the cemet-
ery next to the Dohany Street
Synagogue commemorating the
40th anniversary of the liberation
of the Budapest Ghetto.
