tations about our organiza-
tion."
The debate, however, has
transcended the long-
established lines of Jewish-
Arabic conflict. Another reli-
gious leader on Wayne's cam-
pus, Episcopal Chaplain
William James Wood, says the
Protocols "has no place in the
university other than in the
library as an example of anti-
Semitic literature. To openly
sell this spiritual pornography
brings into question the
spiritual values and integrity
of the sellers.
"It is time," Rev. Wood con-
tinued in a letter to the cam-
pus newspaper, the South
End, "for all groups on campus
to repudiate the distribution of
such obscene material, and to
seek opportunities for
dialogue, truth and mutual re-
spect."
Caught up in the middle of
what has turned into ,a highly
volatile controversy is Abdul
Hamid, owner of Hilal Books,
an Islamic bookstore in the
David Whitney Building in
Detroit, at which the MSA
originally purchased their
copies ofProtocols for distribu-
tion at Wayne.
"I don't know much about
these things," Hamid said. "I
don't know all about history. I
sell books. I have to sell the
book and let others decide if it
was false or not."
Lobenthal says, however,
that Hamid's apparent inno-
cence is strictly that — appar-
ent.
"I spoke with someone at the
store who identified them-
selves as the proprietor," Lo-
benthal said, "and when he
was asked on two separate oc-
casions if the store carried
other anti-Semitic literature,
the reply was, 'Yes, we have
lots. We're a little low right
now. We usually have more.' "

Lobenthal also said he went
to the store to see what mate-
rials were sold, and ended up
leaving with copies of The Pro-
tocols, The Jewish Conspiracy;
Zionism and Racism, The
Zionists Relationship with
Nazi Germany and Zionism:
The Myth and the Reality.
"The clerk -pulled them out
of a box," Lobenthal said. "He

also apologized for not having
more."
Lobenthal also pointed out
that the particular edition of
the Protocols being sold by
Hilal is distributed by the
Christian Nationalist
Crusade, the brainchild of the
late Gerald L.K. Smith who,
according to Lobenthal, "is the
grandfather of modern-day
anti-Semitism."
"I had no idea it would cause
all these problems," Hamid
said. "I must have had 20 calls
already asking me not to sell
the book anymore. When the
publisher contacts me again or
when people ask me to get
these books for them again, I'll
have to give it some extra
thought," Hamid said.
"We'll see," answered Lo-
benthal, "but that statement
to me seems to reek of a total
lack of credibility. When
someone answers the phone
and gleefully resprds, 'Yes,
we carry anti-Semitic litera-
ture,' you really have to won-
der."
