Caution Urged
On EEC
Peace Initiative

Bonn (JTA) — Yitzhak Ben-
Ari, Israel's Ambassador to West
Germany, warned the European
Economic Community nations
Monday that any attempt to use
the agreement reportedly reached
between King Hussein of Jordan
and PLO chief Yassir Arafat as an
excuse for launching a new peace
initiative of their own would
delay the progress of the peace
process.
Ben-Art called upon the Euro-
peans in general and Bonn in par-
ticular to refrain from any new
declarations on the Mideast. The
plea came as the ten EEC gov-
ernments were preparing for a
summit conference of their heads
of state in Brussels next month.
According to reports circulating
here, they will examine proposals
by Italy and others to follow up
the Jordanian-PLO accord with a
peace initiative of their own.
In Tel Aviv, President Chaim
Herzog, returning from his week-
long European visit late Friday
afternoon, told reporters that no
new Middle East initiative by the
European nations should be ex-
pected at this time.
Herzog, accompanied by his
wife, Ora, visited Luxembourg,
Strasbourg and Brussels. In
Strabourg the Israeli chief of
State addressed the Parliament of
Europe. He said he had presented
to the European leaders he met,
Israel's position with respect to its
agricultural exports to Western
Europe in light of the impending
admission of Spain and Portugal
into the European Economic
Community (EEC).
The president and Mrs. Herzog
were greeted on their return by
Premier Shimon Peres, Deputy
Premier Yitzhak Shamir, and
Knesset Speaker Shlomo Hillel.
There was no formal welcoming
ceremony because of the immi-
nence of the Sabbath and the cold,
wet weather.
In Luxembourg, Prime Minis-
ter Jackques Santer told Herzog
last week that his country would
not hesitate to intervene in the
European Economic Community
(EEC) on behalf of relatimis be-
tween the EEC and Israel. He also
re-affirmed the necessity of
guaranteeing Israel's security
permanently.

Pentagon Plans
Sales To Arabs

Washington — The Pentagon is
planning to ask Congress to ap-
prove the sale of $250 million to
aircraft warning equipment to
Saudi Arabia and $21 million in
Hawk anti-aircraft missiles to the
United Arab Emirates.
The Wall Street Journal re-
ported Tuesday that the sales
have been pending, in spite of the
announced U.S. reassessment of
Middle East arms sales. A De-
fense Department spokesman
said the sales were not covered by
the reassessment because they
were already "in the pipeline."
The Saudis would purchase 629
systems to identify friendly air-
craft and the UAE would buy 45
Hawk missiles under the plan.
