Across From Tel-Twelve Mall Southfield, Mich. 353-1300 LOCAL NEWS Precious Legacy Events Preparations are under way for the Midwestern premier of The Precious Legacy: Judaic Trea- sures from the Czechoslovak State Collections on March 11 at the Detroit Institute of Arts. That evening's exhibition and recep- tion is by invitation to 1985 Allied Jewish Campaign contributors of $1,000 or more. As host committee, the Jewish Welfare Federation, in coopera- tion with local synagogues and organizations, has organized many activities in conjunction with the exhibition, which runs from March 13 to May 5. At 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Feb. 28, Midrasha College of Jewish Studies, in cooperation with the American Jewish Congress will host "Images and Insights, a Pre- lude to The Precious Legacy." The slide show and lecture will be pre- sented by Dr. Joseph Gutmann, assistant curator at the DIA, and will take place at Cong. Beth Achim. A graphic illustration of Allied Jewish Campaign partnership will be provided at the March 10 progress report meeting, when a photographic exhibit, "Jewish Life Around the World" opens at the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield. Internationally known photo- grapher Arthur Leipzig will ad- dress the report meeting, to be held in the Aaron Deroy Studio Theater at 9:30 a.m. The exhibit will continue through April 5. On March 11, at Federation's reception, Sen. Carl Levin, as well as other state, local and federal government officials will be in attendance for the opening fes- tivities. At 8 p.m. March 18, a concert honoring The Precious Legacy will be presented at Cong. Beth Abraham Hillel Moses. A cantata, "The Beadle of Prague" will be performed, and a Torah scroll from Prague will be dedicated to mark the synagogue's rebirth from a tragic fire two years ago. Hadassah, Women's American ORT, Midrasha and the Jewish Historical Society, among others, will each be hosting their own tours of the exhibition. Detroit communal leader Paul Zuckerman played an instrumen- tal role in bringing the exhibit here, after the Council of Jewish Federations arranged for its American showing. exhibition and Tickets catalogues are now on sale at the DIA. Interfaith Dialogue Monday Seven religious groups will commemorate the 20th anniver- sary of Vatican Council II at a con- ference featuring Catholic and Jewish religious leaders at 4 p.m. Monday at St. Aidan's Church. The conference features keyn- ote addresses by Rabbi A. James Rudin, national director of Inter- religious Affairs for the American Jewish Committee, and Dr. Eugene J. Fisher, executive secre- tary, Secretariat for Catholic- Jewish Relations, National Con- ference of Catholic Bishops. During the evening program, Fr. Alex J. Brunett, director of the Archdioceses's division of ecu- menical and interreligious affairs and pastor of St. Aidan's, will be presented an original serigraph, entitled "Justice, Justice Shalt Thou Pursue," for his leadership and commitment to ecumenical and interreligious affairs. Fr. Brunett holds degrees from the Sacred Heart Seminary Col- lege, Gregorian University, Uni- versity of Detroit and Marquette University. He is the recipient,,of a variety of honors and awards and is listed in international biographies, in- cluding Who's Who in Religion, American Catholic Who's Who and more. Professionally he has served in a variety of positions as associate pastor, pastor or chaplain. He has several books and articles to his credit. The conference will feature three concurrent seminars re- lated to Vatican II: "Living Room Dialogue"; "Issues That Divide"; and "Educating for Understand- ing: Vatican II as a Teaching Re- source." National and local religious leaders will lead the seminars. They are: Judith Banki, AJC's Fr. Alex Brunett associate director for inter- religious affairs; Robert Dugas, Archdiocesan chairman, Catholic-Jewish subcommittee; Dr. Fisher; Rev. James Lyons, Ecumenical Institute for Jewish-Christian Studies; Rabbi Rudin; and Rabbi Dannel Schwartz, senior rabbi, Temple Beth El. Also participating in the con- ference are the Most Rev. Ed- mund C. Szoka, Archbishop of De- troit, and two participants of Vat- ican II. By videotape, Rabbi Marc H. Tanenbaum, AJC's director of international relations, and De- troit's John Cardinal Dearden will discuss memories of Vatican II. The conference is sponsored by AJC-Detroit Chapter; the Ar- chdiocese; Ecumenical Institute; Jewish Community Council of Greater Detroit; Greater Detroit Round Table, National Confer- ence of Christians and Jews; and the Rabbinical Commission of the Jewish community council.
