Confronting
The Shiksa Myth

When Ms. Toby Schwartz
("Confronting The Shiksa Myth"
Feb. 8) says, The "truth is .. .
shiksas are like us" (i.e. Jewish
women), she has it backwards.
In truth, it is the Jewish woman
who has become like the Shiksa.
She eats treife like the Shiksa,
dresses like one, and cares little of
Shabbos and yiddishkeit. Does
any real difference remain?
The reward for this achieve-
ment is decreased visibility in
Hudson's sportswear department,
anniversary shindigs, and
elsewhere. And more impor-
tantly, if the Shiksa is half of what
her reputation suggests, then why
should the Jewish male settle for
an imitation? Indeed, the inter-
marriage rate of over 50 percent
indicates that Jewish men prefer
the genuine Shiksa over the er-
satz.
The bright spot for Ms.
Schwartz in this dismal situation
is her "new" Jewish Male. She
finds in this hoped-for creature a
desire to avoid the "vapid and ruf-
fled" (her negative stereo-type of
the Shiksa). Rather, he demands a
"capable, compassionate, intelli-
gent, and caring partner"
(presumably Jewish).
But even if he were to exist, she
misreads the situation. Like her
Jewish counterpart, the Shiksa
has gone to college and is more
than capable of pleasing the
"new" Jewish Male upon whom
Ms. Schwartz has pinned so much
of her hope. But here too, the in-
termarriage rate indicates that
her "new" Jewish Male will not be
her savior.
In short, her imaginary Jewish
Male cannot save the situation or
the Jewish woman from herself.
As Ms. Schwartz says, the Jewish
woman and the Shiksa "under the
skin are sisters." That is the
tragedy. Jewish women have only
themselves to blame in the
competition for Jewish males.

As a Jew I was appalled to learn
that the World Jewish Congress
recently met in Vienna, Austria.
Even after 40 years, the Austrian
government has not rid itself of its
Nazi past. While the World
Jewish Congress was meeting
there, Austria's defense minister
was personally greeting a Nazi
war criminal who was just re-
leased from Italy. This same de-
fense minister is head of the Free-
dom Party, known to be pro-Nazi.
It is also a known fact that not
only Hitler, but 80 percent of the
SS under Adolf Eichmann were
Austrians.
It would seem to be that the
World Jewish Congress, by meet-
ing in Austria, is condoning all
this. How much more meaningful,
in the 40th year after the
Holocaust, if the meeting had
been in Israel or Denmark, the
latter the one country where the
head of the country actually
helped the Jews.
