This is probably be- cause Blakeney's has always been thought of with steak and beans . . . or such as would correlate with the name Ranch House. But this is today a very mislead- ing impression . . . as Bob and Dick Blakeney attempt to remove this impression by making con- centrations on the family restau- rant theme. It is located on Grand River be- tween Eight Mile and Middlebelt (V4 mile west of Eight Mile in Farmington, almost across from Botsford Hospital) . . . There are two interesting rooms . . . one seats 44, all in leather padded booths . . . the other 100 all at ta- bles. We sat in the 44-seater with its frosted glass and draped parti- tions, solid beams on slanted cedar roofs, brick wall and lamps over booths from demolished Southwestern High. This is where we had lunch .. . served by smiling; personable and efficient Cathy Burger . .. It was a good lunch, too . . . boneless breast of chicken lightly brushed with teriyaki sauce and mesquite- grilled with its very delightful taste . . . Also included was a most interesting rice pilaf. There were some artifacts abdut . . . but we had heard much of the other room and had to see what so many people are talking about. Separating the two rooms is a seven-stool counter . . . and on the walls are old menus and old pic- tures. _ Entering the other room is an experienced . . . never saw so many antiques and bric-a-brac .. . Everything imaginable hants from the 'ceiling . . . Even the knickers and Wayne State frosh cap worn by Bob and Dick's dad, Bill Blakeney . . . This is where the salad bar is also . . . for lunch or dinner . : . with over 20 items in an 1850s copper bathtub framed with wood . . . Hanging by the Salad Bowl is a sign, "Towels Extra." The Blakeney's Restaurant of today is very much different than yesteryears . . . Back in 1931, grandfather of Bob and Dick, Harvey Blakeney, who passed on in 1959, opened Blakeney's Juicy Hamburger, W. Six Mile, across from University of Detroit, where the Detroit Lions football team of those days used to play their games . . . Grandpa Blakeney in- troduced a juicy steak hamburger as his specialty item, served with a dish of family-recipe country- style baked beans . . . The sand- wich was unique, served on a long bun and simmered in beef juice, not fried and put on a round bun . . . Generation after generation . . . and that same sandwich still remains . . . called the "Lon- ghorn" . . . As for the baked beans, over eight tons of dried beans are bought each year now. Harvey's son, Bill, opened his own restaurant on Cass Ave. across from what is now Wayne State U. . . . Three years later, in 1938, he built the first Blakeney's Ranch House on W. Davison near Dexter . . . A locale considered then to be on the outskirts of town . . . but now far enough to keep people away from those yummy burgers and beans . . . For a couple of years it was also a drive- in . . . Fred and Louis Elias used to come in asking Bill for sugges- tions since they were soon intend- ing to go into the restaurant busi- ness. Bill opened the present Blakeney's Ranch House in 1968 with sons Bob and Dick . . . Bill retired in 1976 . . . and his sons took over. That Longhorn sandwich with baked beans served by Granddad Harvey is still on the menu at Blakeney's . . . but along with it is a much more extensive selection . . . About 13 sandwiches, six soups, mesquite char-grilled or regular . . . fresh fish, chicken, steaks, ribs . . . Also three salads, including a Chicken and Almond Salad, six soups and seven des- serts . . . There's a separate chil- dren's menu . . . mixed drinks, beer, wine . . . Spanish, Irish, Jamaican, Keoki coffees and English Java (Bailey's Irish Cream, Tia Maria and coffee.) Tom McKinnon, now with his own gourmet restaurant - in Northville, -was a busboy at Blakeney's on Grand River .. . then prep cook . . . After going to Danny's Gin -MIll (now Diggers), Tom married one of Blakeney's waitresses, Jannine Ouelette. The Blakeney employees have-a - togetherness involvement . . . and this very fine trait rubs off on their treatment of customers .. . Last Christmas, they took it upon themselves to amass a collection which was matched by Bob and Dick . . . Children's Hospital -re- ceived 600 stuffed animals as a result of their kind thoughtful- ness . . . and you can be sure a lot of kiddies were made very happy. Outside catering has also gone over big for the Blakeneys .. . with everything on the menu plus prime rib , - etc., available. The restaurant is open Sundays for breakfast buffet ($4.95) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. . . . Only Saturdays and Sundays are breakfast hours during the seven-day week . . . Monday-Thursday, 11-11; Friday, 11-12 Midnight; Saturday, 9-12 midnight; Sunday, 9-11. Blakeney's on Grand River west of Eight Mile in Farmington won't be a secret too much longer . . . Grandpa Harvey would have been proud of Bob and Dick . . . We know dad Bill sure is. IT BEGAN AS A muttering rumor . . . then wildfired into - much talk . . . But the final deal wasn't closed until last week .. . which is why you hadn't seen any- thing written yet. Now it is fact . . . and can finally be revealed ... Original Irving's, Greenfield, north of 11 Mile Road, is no longer a Guttman operation . . . It has been sold to Chutzpah Enterprises . . . owned by Larry Krohn, Allen Cohen and Steve Weston, who have known each other many years. Larry is the working partner . . . and assumes managerial re- sponsibility at Original Irving's. OPERA LOVERS WILL enjoy Mario's, Second Blvd. on Friday evenings . . . That's when
