the wards had already learned
to smile. Each day a doctor
would teach them a new He-
brew word as he made his
rounds. "Mayhem," he re-
peats. "Water." "Lechem," he
repeats. The children answer,
"Bread." "ShOlom," and he
leaves. There is no reason to
believe the Ethiopians won't
be fast learners, at least the
children. .Few if any Israelis
know the Ethiopian language
of Amharic. But soon the
Ethiopian children will know
Hebrew. •
The Ethiopian Jews are
seen everywhere in Israel .. .
in the streets of Beersheva, in
Safed, in the West Bank. For
Israel, at a time of her most
trying difficulties over infla-
tion and security problems in
Lebanon, to even consider tak-
ing in another 10,000 black
Jews who come without educa-
tion, skills or language, beg-
gars the immagination. The
short plane ride transports
them from the 15th Century to
the 20th Century in a few
hours, but what a culture
shock in plucking a lost tribe
from extinction and bringing
them to Israel.
The mistake made with the
Yemenite Jews 30 years ago,
when Operation Magic Carpet
made a similar airlift, will not
be repeated with the Ethio-
pian Jews. This time, they will
not be segregated in special
settlements but scattered and
distributed throughout the
land.
No other country besides Is-
rael seems to be doing much

for the Ethiopians except talk.
America isn't taking in Ethio-
pians, nor is Britain nor
France nor any other Western
country. The Arab countries
have not lifted a finger, nor
has the USSR. Only little Is-
rael, with all her problems at
the moment, has opened her
doors like the Lady With The
Lamp . . . "Give me your tired,

Only little Israel,
with all her problems
at the moment, has
opened her doors like
the Lady With The
Lamp . . .

your poor, your huddled mas-
ses yearning to be free . . ."
What Israel is going to do
with these black Jews is an-
other question. Israelis are ex-
cited and want to share their
pride in the airlift, but after
the joy of rescuing human be-
ings has settled down to the
grim realities of providing
jobs, housing, schools, even
nursing them back to health,
what then? There is much un-
finished business. The social
and economic problems of re-
settlement are not far off. Yet
right now, history has been
made as Operation Moses has
brought thousands of Ethio-
pian Jews to the Promised
Land. They are the lucky ones.
They survived the trauma of
Ethiopian famine. Now, they
have come home.

BOOKS

Niles Guided Truman

President
Franklin
D.
Roosevelt's hesitance in providing
support in rescue efforts for Jews
during the Nazi years of terror are
now being related in many his-
tories of that period.
At the same time, President
Harry S. Truman's pro-Israel
stand is equally being tested.
Both roles have been depicted
in what is being acknowledged as
a leader in historical analyses of
the World War II years, with em-
phasis on the rebirth of Israel, in
Israel in the Mind of America,
which was published in 1983 by
Knopf. This very important work
has now been reissued as a paper-
back by Schocken Books.
The important volume by Peter
Grose also provides the best
available data on the great con-
tributions made to this country's
support for Zionism and Israel by
David Niles. As a member of the
official White House staffs under
Roosevelt and Truman, Niles
rates among the most important

Jewish personalities in the years
of the two Presidents.
The hard cover Knopf volume
was reviewed in The Jewish News
issue of Nov. 11, 1983. As in that
instance, this volume is highly
recommended as a most signific-
ant and most authoritative work
on American-Israel relations.
