Reagan Pushes
For Prayer

Washington (JTA) — President
Reagan, in his State of the Union
address last week, once again
urged Congress to adopt legisla-
tion permitting prayer in the pub-
lic school.
Reagan did not mention any
specific proposal in a brief com-
ment in which he thanked Con-
gress for passing last year the law
requiring high schools to permit
religious groups to use classrooms
after school if other organizatios
have this extra-curricular
privilege.
"But no citizen need tremble,
nor the world shudder, if a child
stands in a classroom and
breathes a prayer," the President
said. "We ask you again: give
children back a right they had for
a century-and-a-half or more."
However, neither the call for
school prayer nor Reagan's re-
quest for legislation ending abor-
tions are expected to be pressed by
the Administration while Con-
gress engages in a long struggle
over the President's proposed
1986 budget. Reagan did not men-
tion the Middle East in his speech,
only slightly touching on foreign
policy issues.

Groups Protest
Star, Crosses

New York — A local govern-
ment cannot erect_ three Latin
crosses and a Star of David on
public property and expect the
display to pass Constitutional
muster simply because officials
designate it as a war memorial,
say two major Jewish organiza-
tions.
An amici, or friends-of-the
court, brief submitted by the
American Jewish Congress and
the Synagogue Council of
America to the United States
Court of Appeals for the Fifth Cir-
cuit, contended that a Texas
county commissioner violated the
Constitutional requirement of
church-state separation when he
placed such religious symbols in a
public park.
The brief, which was released
by Neil Cogan, president of the
Dallas Region of the American
Jewish Congress, said that Robert
Eck-els, commissioner of Harris
County, acted "impermissibly" to
advance religion when he set
aside a portion of Bear Creek
Park, Houston, for "mediation" or
use as a war memorial and deco-
rated it with religious symbols.

Historic Venues
For Israel Fest

Jerusalem — Some of Israel's
most historic sites will provide the
setting for a throng of home-
grown and international stars
during the annual Israel Festival
May 18-June 8.
This year's festival program
features opera; traditional and
modern theater; symphonic, vocal
and chamber music, dance per-
formances; and multi-media
productions. Venues range from
the Sultan's Pool and the am-
pitheater on Mt. Scopus, to
Jerusalem's modern concert halls
and theaters.
