risks. To such people they had
an obligation. Small wonder,
too, that it was Menachem
Begin who in 1977 began to
take steps for the transfer of
this handsome and curious
population to the Jewish state.
It was among the strengths of
Begin's weaknesses, this
dumb devotion to every last
Jew, this "potato love," in Saul
Bellow's phrase, for his people,
this crude but powerful feeling
that a Jew is a Jew is a Jew
and that is all Jews need to
know. The Israeli intervention
on behalf of the Falashas pro-
vides the most dramatic illus-
tration since the early years of
Israel, when virtually all the
Jewish populations of the
Middle East and North Africa
were brought to Israel "on
eagle's wings," of the funda-
mental hypothesis of national
Jewish identity: that a Jew
from Ethiopia or Yemen has
more in common with a Jew
from Poland or France than
with a non-Jew from Ethiopia
or Yemen. It is a scandalous
suggestion. It is both true and
false, obviously. To the extent
that it is true, Israeli society
works. To the extent that it is
false, Israeli society does not
work. The brutal ethnic ten-
sions of recent years are owed
in good measure to the neglect
of these differences among
Jews. Still, they have not yet
vanquished the similarities —
or, more to the point, the sense
of the similarities. It is the
consciousness that counts.
These Jews will live together
exactly as long and as well as
they feel that they should live
together. -
I do not mean to pettify.
Almost no Jews emigrated to
Israel from Ethiopia until the
Ethiopian revolution of 1975.
Like other Jews in other Dias-
poras, they required the prod
of persecution. Moreover,
there can be no doubt that the
new immigrants will quickly
be faced with terrible prob-
lems; they are goat farmers
landed in a state-of-the-art
modern polity. And they will
be faced with terrible prej-
udices; Zionism may not be ra-
cism, but racism is racism.
They may find that they are
most welcome in settlements
of the West Bank, for which
they may provide a new and
sorely needed fund of settlers;
15 Ethiopian families are al-
ready installed in Kiryat
Arba, the Jewish neighbor-
hood in Hebron. (The State
Department has "expressed
concern" about these few
lucky pawns of the Israeli
right, but it is silent about the
