improvement is another mat-
ter. Difficult though it is, it is
the task of the good Jew to st-
rive all his or her life to be an
even better Jew. "There is no
rest for the wicked." Yes,
Judaism does say this, but in
another sense, "There is no
rest for the righteous."
The good person can never
rest content but must ever st-
rive to do better and to make
further progress toward the
goal: the nearness of God.
Ethics of the Fathers sums up
the ethical character (5:19):
"Whosoever has these three
attributes is of the disciples of
Abraham our father, but
whosoever has three other
attributes is of the disciples of
Salaam the wicked. A good
eye, a humble mind and a lowly
spirit are the marks of the dis-
ciples of Abraham our father;
an evil eye, a haughty mind
and a proud spirit are the
marks of the disciples of
Balaam the wicked." The pas-
sage continues that the "disci-
ples of Abraham our father
enjoy this world and inherit
the World to Come."
Dr. Jacobs provides an espe-
cially exciting and challenging
chapter on the question of "The
Chosen People." The "embarras-
sed" will be enlightened by this
comment:
Some Jews are embar-
rassed by the whole idea of
Israel's chosenness. Why
should God choose a spe-
cial people for a particular
role? The problem was put
in the little rhyme:

How odd
Of God
To choose
The Jews

to which one reply was gi-
ven:

guideline for Jews who may be
angered by the title of chosenness
and by Jews who need an explana-
tion for their neighbors on this
theme:
"One thing is quite certain. The
idea of a Chosen People does not
mean that God is concerned only
with Jews. Such a perverse idea
would be entirely contrary to
Jewish teaching, which, after all,
believes in the God who created
all people in his image."
The thoroughness with which
the multiplicity of ideas relating
to Judaism is covered in The Book
of Jewish Belief elevates it to
great significance. It serves as a
guide for learning and as a great
textbook for all who seek knowl-
edge about Judaism and the
Jewish people.

Meyerhoff Leaves
Mark As Activist

Joseph Meyerhoff was a
philanthropist. He also had lead-
ership qualities. His Zionist iden-
tification, his deep interest in the
Weizmann Institute in Rehovot
and numerous other Israeli
causes for decades listed him
among the activists in Jewish
areas. He aided civic and educa-
tional movements. He was not
parochial in his tasks. He re
sponded on a large scale to all im-
portant causes.
This columnist's association
with him began on Nov. 2, 1949,
in Rehovot, at the historic Weiz- <
mann Institute sessions when
new buildings were being dedi-
cated and Chaim Weizmann,
nearly blind, delivered a major
address before an audience of
world leaders and Arab notables.
Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Meyerhoff
showed their enthusiasm for the
Zionist cause then and they con-
r/
tinued it through the decades.
He was more than philan-
thropist: Joseph Meyerhoff was
also an eminent American ac-
tivist who showed an interest in
politics, social needs, Jewish
causes. That's how he will be re-
membered.

It isn't odd
The Jews
Chose God.

As Israel Zangwill
said, the chosen people is a
choosing people.

Israel To Launch Satellite

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Israel is
planning to orbit its own com-
munications satellite following
the recent launch of the Arab
League's Arabsat, according to
Communications Ministry Direc-
tor General Yoram Alster.
With Arabsat now in space, ex-
perts feel the Arabs are some
five-ten years ahead of Israel in
the electronic communications
field.
Alster said Sunday it was hoped
that the necessary funds for the
expensive project would be raised
from commercial sources which
would want to use the satellite,
particularly firms engaged in the
transfer of computer data.

Israel experts will keep a close
watch on Arabsat relays to make
sure they do not interfere with Is-
raeli television and radio chan-
nels. Meanwhile, the Communi-
cations Ministry has arranged to
lease equipment from the
Washington-based Intelsat corpo-
ration for telephone and televi-
sion transmissions and reception
via the Intelsat satellites already
in orbit.
Alster said his ministry also
has contracted for the lease of six
transponders aboard the Itelsat
satellite. Transponders are radars
which respond to received signals
by instantly transmitting signals
of their own.
