But vast stretches of barren terrain still remain to be covered by a blanket of green. the students not directly to the text of the Torah, but through his lectures, to basic concepts and his own interpretations which present a systematic introduction to Judaism. "Today we've gone from the flower children to business ma- jors," he says of his yeshiva. "They're worried about the world, though, and the meaning of life. Our approach to them may be different but we're still selling the same thing." He smiles. "After all," he con- tinued, "we tell them we repre- sent an old, eminent firm with a solid reputation. Our competi- tors copy our products. We're a family firm, so give us a little investment." During his current visit to the U.S., Rabbi Weinberg is re- cruiting young people to train in Jerusalem for six weeks this summer, a kind of mini-Jewish peace corps. He is offering 120 Jerusalem Fellowships, pri- marily from New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, St. Louis and Toronto where he has a yeshiva base. He plans an innovative program which will include such topics as happiness, pleasure and love your neighbor. "No one else does this," he says. "We're not trying to make Talmudists out of them in six weeks. We want to train them to do follow- up in the community, to be able to defend the Jewish people •against the PLO and the mis- sionaries on college campuses, to set an example of Jewish pride for other young people." There are times when Rabbi Weinberg sounds as if he has a programmed response for every question one might ask him. But he paused for a long moment when asked what he himself had learned most from his ex- periences. "I've learned how beautiful and how powerful we are as a people," he said quiet- ly. "We have an innate drive, a talent and beauty that lifts my spirit.
