say whether U.S. agents would
participate in the search for the
war criminal.
It was learned, meanwhile, that
Justice Minister Moshe Nissim
has established an inter-
ministerial headquarters to coor-
dinate government activities to
track down Mengele. The inter-
ministerial group will consisted of
representatives of the Justice
Ministry, Foreign Ministry,
police and other government
agencies. Nissim said all legal
preparations have been com-
pleted to bring Mengele to swift
trial in Israel once he is found and
captured.
In Toronto, the League of
Human Rights of B'nai B'rith
Canada has asked the House of
Commons for amendments to the
federal criminal code that would
make it possible to bring Nazi war
criminals to trial in Canada.
The Royal Canadian Mounted
Police has said it has information
on some 150 suspected Nazi crim-
inals who entered Canada after
World War II. But others, includ-
ing researchers and experts on the
subject, say that as many as 3,000
Nazi war criminals found refuge
in Canada.

Quito, Ecuador (JTA) — Mili-
tary sources revealed recently
that an Israeli armaments firm
has been awarded a multi-
million-dollar contract to moder-
nize the People's Republic of Chi-
na's 9,000 aging Soviet-designed
tanks.
The military experts, who in-
sisted on anonymity, maintained
that Israeli, expertise in rebuild-
ing and adapting various features
of Soviet battle tanks, in particu-
lar, guidance systems, was the de-
ciding factor in awarding the con-
tract. (Israel, as a matter or
routine, will not comment on such
reports.)
This puts an end to Argentina's
hopes for a break-through con-
tract with China for its TAM
tank, produced under a licensing
agreement with the German arms
manufacturer Thyssen-Henschel.
