Precious Legacy
Subject Of Workshop

A workshop on the Precious Le-
gacy — Czech Jewry exhibit is
being organized for secondary
school teachers by the Jewish
Community Council of Metropoli-
tan Detroit.
Presented in cooperation with
the Detroit Institute of Arts, the
program will take place on Wed-
nesday at 4 p.m. at John F. Ken-
nedy Elementary School, 16229
Mt. Vernon, Southfield.
The workshop will include in-
formation on Czech Jewish his-
tory and Czechoslovakia during
the Holocaust, a slide presenta-
tion featuring many of the exhibit
displays, and information on
group tours, tickets, times and
transportation.
Dr. Beverly Geltner, associate
superintendent for instruction,
Southfield Public Schools, will
discuss why the exhibit.is impor-
tant to educators and their stu-
dents. Dr. Sidney Bolkosky, pro-
fessor of history at the University
of Michigan-Dearborn, will re-
view Czech Jewish history. Janet
Landay, assistant curator, de-
partment of education, Detroit In-
stitute of Arts, will guide partici-
pants through the slide presenta-
tion, and will give information on
group tours and other details.
Pre-registration is required.

The Jewish Community Coun-
cil of Metropolitan Detroit is
planning a series of public lec-
tures to provide an arena for
communal discussion on controv-
ersial issues affecting the Jewish
community.
The first program, focusing on
U.S. policy in Central America,
will start at 8 p.m. Tuesday at
Temple Emanu-El. Speakers are
University of Michigan Prof.
Judith Laikin Elkin, president of
the Latin American -- Jewish
Studies Association, and John R.
Hamilton, regional political af-
fairs officer with the U.S. De-
partment of State. Temple
Emanu-el is a co-sponsor.
Issues being considered for the
series include Israel's settlement
policy, the future of public educa-
tion, Jewish political action com-
mittees (PACs), and Jewish re-
sponses to the Christian right.

JCCouncil Prepares
For Yom HaShoah

The Holocaust Subcommittee of
the Jewish Community Council
will offer a Yom HaShoah pro-
gram to area Hebrew schools.
The program, developed by
Betty Rotberg Ellias, focuses
upon aspects of Jewish history
that relate to the theme of survi-
val.
Copies of the Yom HaShoah
program are available through
the Jewish Community Council.
Teachers and administrators in-
terested in obtaining the material
should call the Council office,
