good shape," militarily, although
the Soviets have greatly in-
creased the supply of arms going
to Syria.
Says Rabin: "I'm not saying the
Soviets would not have given the
Syrians these weapons anyway,
but I believe (without the 1982 in-
vasion) it would have taken them
an additional five or ten years."
Time reports that in Washing-
ton, Rabin won promises of $1.8
billion in U.S. military assistance
but failed to change the Adminis-
tration's stance that Jerusalem
must first implement domestic
austerity programs before in-
creased economic aid can be con-
sidered.
In his interview, Rabin called
the economic crisis "our most
serious problem, the one on which
the fate of the national unity gov-
ernment will be tested and
judged."

Jerusalem (JTA) — A bus
driver and one passenger were
wounded last week when ter-
rorists opened fire on an Egged
bus on the Jerusalem-Hebron
highway. Military authorities
clamped a curfew on three Arab
villages in the area as soldiers
began a search for the attackers.
The incident was the second of
its kind in two months on the
same highway in the West Bank.
Terrorists have recently stepped
up their attacks on Israeli ve-
hicles in the territory, mainly
throwing rocks and an occasional
Molotov cocktail. Last week's
shooting ambush was the most
serious terrorist act in weeks.
The bus was enroute from
Jerusalem to the Etzion bloc set-
tlements when it came under
automatic fire at about 7 p.m.
local time. Bullets pierced the
windshield wounding the driver
in the leg and hitting a passenger.
The driver was hospitalized. The
passenger was given first aid and
sent home.

Terror Alert
At Embassies

Brussels (JTA) — Stringent se-
curity measures are being taken
at embassies of five countries —
including the Embassy of Israel—
after the Belgian government re-
ceived information of a possible
terrorist attack by the pro-
Iranian group, Islamic Jihad. The
decision to place police forces on
massive alert followed the dis-
covery, in Beirut, of 30 pages of
documents detailing some 20
targets to be hit in Brussels.
