It is called the "atomic age," the "hyd- rogen age," and very often it is called the "age of counseling." We have vocational counselors, fi- nancial counselors, marriage counselors, management coun- selors. One of the first counselors re- corded in history, is found in this week's portion of the Torah. His name was Jethro. He was the father-in-law of Moses. He saw Moses judging the people from early morning until late at night. The Torah describes it in these words: "And when his father-in- law saw all that Moses was doing Moses: Received sound advice for the people, he said, 'What is family — the father who has abdi- this thing that you do? And Moses said to his father- We ought to ask ourselves: Is in-law: "That is because the that what life is all about? Is it the people come to me for guidance and counseling, and I judge be- tween each man and his Yitro: neighbor." And his father-in-law said unto Exodus 18:1-20:23. . him: "Moses, the thing that you are doing is not good. Thou wilt Isaiah 6:1-7:6; 9:5-6. surely wear away." If Jethro were living today, his quest for fame and fortune, at the counsel would have sounded expense of our family? If so, that's something like this: "Moses, a pretty high price to pay. In many you're working too hard. You're cases, we have become prisoners burning the candle at both ends. You're going to be a victim of of progress, victims of our own in- burn-out. Why don't you learn to ventions. Jethro's advice to Moses spoken take it easy?" That phrase, "take it easy," has hundreds of years ago, is appro- become so commonplace, that in- priate to this very day. Yes, "take it easy." But, in addition, take stead of saying "good-bye" to people, (which means "God be time to live a meaningful life, with you,") we say instead: "take dedicated to worthy and noble go- als. it easy." Now why is such counsel neces- sary today,,especially with all our Clinic Director technological achievements? I can To Speak At Temple understand that 50 years ago, be- fore there were washing machines, such a reminder would be appropriate. But today, with all the labor saving devices that we have, we ought to be the least burdened people in all of recorded history. Yet, statistics demon- strate that although our hands are softer, our hearts are sadder and heavier. We can do things fas- ter and with less effort than ever before, but at what expense to our bodies and minds and nerves. And at what expense to our families!
