Nazi Retains
NASA Honor

New York (JTA) — Brooklyn
District Attorney Elizabeth
Holtzman said that the National
Aeronautics and Space Adminis-
tration (NASA) has rejected her
call on President Reagan and the
agency to strip Nazi war criminal
Arthur Rudolph of NASA'S high-
est honor, awarded him for his
work in the U.S. space program.
Holtzman said she was dis-
mayed by NASA's refusal to act.
Rudolph was responsible for the
deaths of thousands of slave
laborers at a Nazi rocket con-
struction plant during World War
II. He came to the United States,
became a high-ranking NASA of-
ficial, and received NASA's Dis-
tinguished Services Medal in
1969.
Last Oct. 19, after the Justice
Department revealed that
Rudolph had left the United
States rather than face charges
here relating to the deaths of
slave laborers, Holtzman sent a
telegram urging President Rea-
gan and NASA administrator
James Beggs to strip him of his
medals.
In stating that NASA would let
Rudolph keep his honors, NASA
official Eugene Marionetti re-
cently wrote to Holtzman, "to re-
scind the medal would serve no
useful purpose, since it has noth-
ing in common with the allegation
brought against him."
"It is an affront to the millions
who died to suggest that it would
serve no useful purpose to strip
this notorious Nazi murderer of
his high American honors,"
Holtzman said. "It is deplorable
that NASA has responded in this
way."
