Rev. Dr. S. Parkes Cadman,
which appeared in the New York
Herald Tribune on Nov. 13, 1932,
under the title "The Jew's Lot in
Germany." As the date indicates,
Dr. Cadman, in his expression of
horror over the anti-Semitic
occurrences in Germany, was
dealng with the first phases of
Hitler's anti-Jewish insanities.
He commenced his lengthy expose
of what was happening in what
was once the great German cul-
tural center with the following:
"Two Berlin University stu-
dents lay on the sidewalk, blood
streaming from the pulpy lips of
one, while a welt swelled from the
cheek to the forehead of the other.
Five Nazis, in their brown coats,
ran away as a police truck ap-
proached.
"The Nazi students had been
making a get-away from a rally
which the police had been trying
to break up for the last hour on
Unter den Linden. As the five Hit-
lerites had trotted along, greatly
excited from their mass demon-
strations, they had spotted the
two students — Jews — and so
they had slugged them with brass
"knuckledusters."
"The anti-Semitism I want to
discuss, however, is deeper than
bouts between college sopho-
mores; it is a tragic disease of hate
in a national family and unless
something is done about it the
contagion is liable to spread to
other countries, perhaps to our
own. England regards it seri-
ously:

" 'For years and years Jews
have lived peacefully in the
smaller provincial towns of East-
N
ern Prussia,' says The Manchester
Guardian Weekly. 'But since the
ascendancy of the Nazi movement
Jewish shopkeepers and trades-
men have been exposed to ever
growing intimidation. Attacks in
N
the local Nazi press, insults and
menaces, informal boycotts, the
N
intimidation of customers and at
times — as now — open violence
have plunged innumerable Jews
who have harmed no one and are
almost defenseless into ruin and
despair.
"The New Statesman and Na-
tion, of London, pictures the Ger-
man affliction in some detail:
" 'Synagogues have been dis-
figured with the anti-Semitic
Swastika, or damaged, or de-
--
stroyed, in different parts; houses
have been broken into; shops have
been looted. During the last few
years in Germany over 130
Jewish cemeteries have been de-
secrated mostly by youthful van-
dals, who take a fiendish joy in the
smashing of tombstones. The
slanderous legend of ritual mur-
der has been revived and innocent
Jews have been put on trial.
Numerous newspapers indulge in
a veritable orgy of abusive ac-
) cusation, preaching economic
boycott and threatening the Jews
with confiscation of property, dis-
franchisement, and even banish-
ment.' "
Etcetera, etcetera, etcetera .. .
Dr. Cadman proceeded to state
that he wanted to be fair to the
ad-
Germans, and in fairness he ad-
