"Sent by News abroad in 1929 to Russia and Poland; 1934 around the world to Russia, China, Japan and Manchukuo; 1937 to Poland, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Czechoslovakia and Sweden; 1939 to England, France, Switzerland. Returned on the storm-tossed President Harding. "Has interviewed many promi- nent men, among them Mussolini, ex-president Benes of Czechos- lovakia, Einstein, Emperor Pu Yi of Manchukuo, Cardinal Czer- noch, the Duke of Aosta, the pre- miers of China, Japan, Man- chukuo, etc." - In respect to the distinguished newspaperman, it should be stated that the data is incomplete. It does not indicate that Philip Adler was on an assignment by the Detroit News and died in a plane crash in Japan. The purpose of that mission in 1946 is not ex- plained. Furthermore: it does not credit Philip Adler with many notewor- thy qualities. He was a linguist and was as expressive in Russian, Yiddish and French as he was in English. He was the star Detroit News reporter but was denied the right to be the newspaper's radio commentator — a role that was major at that time, when televi- sion was still in its advancing stages. It was because of his deci- sive Russian accent, and that pre- vented him from becoming a radio star. When he did appear on radio his comments were sensational. But because of the accent, the top position of radio commentat- ing for the Detroit News went to Russell Barnes. Philip Adler was a confirmed Zionist. He was a supporter and admirer of Vladimir Jabotinsky and insisted on being considered a Revisionist Zionist. He was milit- antly Jewish. Here are a few of the items in the Detroit News, published in the crucial years, in which Philip Adler bylined the revelations of the horrors that were promul- gated against Jewry and mankind by the Nazi beasts. Basing his facts on reports provided him by escapees from the Nazi terror in early 1942, Adler's indictments, the revelations of what was occur- ring in Germany at the time, are indicated in these headlines over his bylined articles: "Race Pollution" Cases Reveal Cruelty of Hitler Laws. Gestapo is Judge, Jury and Executioner. German People Afraid To Think, Talk or Listen. Children Snared in. Gestapo Net Hitler Wrecks Morals and Morales of Subjects. The Quackery of Germany's New Racial Science. Hitlerism Creates New Crimes and Professions. While these sound as being of a general nature, it is the Jew as the target of the Nazi brutalities who emerges in these series of articles. As means of recalling the jour- nalistic skills of a contemporary of Philip Adler, it is fair to recall the articles exposing the Nazi horrors that were reported by the late Ben Wigder, who gained a leading role on the Detroit News reportorial staff. Jewish writers on the staff of the Detroit News half-a-century ago were not the only ones who were serious in tackling reports exposing the German criminals. James L. Devlin, the chief Federal Building and federal courts re- porter, and Gen. S.L.A. Marshall were among them. The retrieving of the newspaper reports to show press reactions to the mass murders, inspired by David Wyman's The Abandon- ment of the Jews, dealt with the years including and following 1942-1943. Six years earlier there already was the concern about the rise of Hitler's power and the treatment of it by the American press. There was an important Detroit occurrence that relates to the ear- lier period. Russell Gore, who had served as editorial director of the Detroit News, visited Germany for three weeks and was fed much of the Nazi propaganda, with em- phasis on the anti-Semitic as- pects. His series of articles in the Detroit News aroused great con- cern. While Russell Gore had a fine record of fair treatment of is- sues affecting Jews, the manner in which he swallowed some of the Nazi propaganda was much more than irritating. Thereupon, this writer authored a reply and asked a group of prominent Jews to co- sign it. It appeared in the Detroit News, Aug. 23, 1936. The six- column headline read: "Detroit Jews Answer Nazi Persecution Defense." There was a sub-head which stated: "Stranglehold" Charges Depicted as Absurdities. A second subhead stated: Russell Gore's Article in Sunday News Elicits Statement Attacking Offi- cial Exposition of Germany Policy. The signers of the response to the Gore article were: Fred M. Butzel, James I. Ellmann, Kurt Peiser, Simon Shetezer, Rabbi Leon Fram, Philip Slomovitz and Dora B. Ehrlich. Such is the local addendum to the indictment by David Wyman. Whatever was enacted here to condemn the Nazi terrors and the menace that faced the Jews is minimal. But the record must be kept and retained for posterity to be fully aware of the great tragedy. Recalling Christian Voice On Nazism An important addendum to the David Wyman indictments in The Abandonment of the Jews is pro- vided by Ruth Eisenstein, daugh- ter of the late Bernard G. Richards, whose BGR initials symbolized for historians and ar- chivists that data he provided was the most accurate on Jewish and world matters. He was the creator of the Jewish Information Bureau, from the files of which Mrs. Eisenstein has culled an article by the late
