Friday, February 1, 1985 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS NEWS Arab Terror > Plot In Greece? Athens (JTA) — Mystery sur- rounds a report in the Greek weekly,Ena, that 100 Arab assas- sins from various Syrian-backed Palestinian terrorist organiza- tions were being sent to Greece to murder Arab diplomats and Palestine Liberation Organiza- tion officials and to commit acts of sabotage. According to the magazine, the plot was foiled when an Arab dip- lomat in an unnamed Eastern Mediterranean country supplied the Greek authorities with the false names and the numbers of the forged passports the assassins would use to enter Greece and the names of the diplomats and others on their "hit list." The magazine also said that when Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou was apprised of the situation, he sent a letter to President Hafez Assad of Syria warning him, in diplomatic terms, that Syria would be held responsible if such breaches of the peace occurred in Greece. A Greek government spokes- man, Dimitri Maroudas, refused to disclose a meeting between a ranking official of the Greek Foreign Ministry and the Syrian Ambassador in mid-December at which the envoy was warned that Greek-Arab relations would suf- fer a setback in the event of vio- lent inter-Arab activities on Greek soil. The government denied the other elements of the Ena story. The magazine claimed that the assassins were ordered to enter Greece in small groups and that during the first week of January, 16 Arabs carrying forged passports arrived from Syria and were immediately deported. An anonymous source cited by the magazine said three of them were not deported but placed under ar- rest. Israel Divorce Laws Remain Unchanged Jerusalem (JTA) — Israel's chief rabbis have politely refused to do anything to ease the reli- gious divorce laws which often impose severe hardships on women. There is no civil divorce in Israel. The two Chief Rabbis, Av- raham Shapiro, Ashkenazic, and Mordechai Eliahu, Sephardic, re- ceived a delegation representing women's organizations to hear their plea for change. But accord- ing to Arye Rosenzweig of the Tel Aviv University law faculty, one of three Orthodox lawyers who discussed the problem with the rabbis, Shapiro and Eliahu were "sympathetic" but claimed there was little they could do. Of about 15,000 divorce peti- tions filed each year in Israel, only 5,000 are resolved. In many cases one partner, most often the woman, has to wait years for a divorce decree because the other spouse refuses to agree to terms. The religious courts which have sole jurisdiction, usually will not grant a divorce if one • spouse re- fuses to agree. .1.1,,,„ ., „ „ BE THERE!
