DRIED-FRUIT
LOKSHEN KUGEL

"Noodle pudding" is popular for
Ashkenazic Jews throughout the
year, but this delectable one is
especially appropriate for Tu
B'Shevat. It is not overly_ sweet,
and makes a perfect side-dish for a
holiday dinner or buffet meal.

1 8-oz. package medium-wide
noodles
4 tbsps. vegetable oil, divided
4 large eggs
1/2 cup sugar
1 cup orange juice
1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
tsp. ground ginger
Pinch of salt
3 /4 cup diced mixed dried fruits,
such as prunes, apricots,
dates and /or figs
Y4 cup raisins
1 medium-sized apple, peeled
(if desired) and diced (ab-
out 1 cup)
Cook the noodles according to

the package directions. Drain
them well; then put them in a
bowl (or back into the pot), and
toss them with 2 tbsps. of the oil to
keep them from sticking together.
Set aside to cool slightly.

In a large bowl, beat the eggs
with the sugar until well mixed.
Beat in the remaining 2 tbsps. oil.
Then beat in the orange juice,
cinnamon, ginger, and salt. Add
the mixed dried fruit, raisins, and
apple. Add the cooked noodles,
and stir until all the ingredients
are evenly distributed.

Transfer the noodle mixture to
a greased or nonstick spray-
coated 10-inch square casserole
(or equivalent). Cover the cas-
serole with a lid or foil, and bake
the kugel in a preheated 350-
degree oven for 20 minutes. Re-
move the lid or foil, and bake the
kugel, uncovered, for 20 minutes
longer or until it seems to be firm
and set. Let it cool slightly before
cutting it into squares to serve.
Serve warm or at room tempera-
ture.
Makes about 9 servings.

Taba Talks Are Concluded

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Three days of
talks between Israel and Egypt
over the future status of Taba
ended at Beersheba Tuesday with
little progress to report, save that
the two delegations agreed to
meet again in about a month. No
date was set.
Taba is a tiny strip of beach on
the Gulf of Aqaba claimed by both
countries. Egypt broke off the
negotiations two years ago and
they have only just resumed. Zvi
Keddar, head of the Israeli dele-
gation, told reporters he was not
certain where the talks .stand at
the moment.
Abdul Halim el-Badawi, leader
of the Egyptian delegation, said
Cairo was ready to continue the
talks but wants third party arbi-
tration. The joint communique is-
sued by the Israelis, Egyptian and
U.s. observers said only that the
talks would be continued at a time
and place yet to be fixed.
In their talks, the negotiators
discussed a proposal to deploy
troops of the Multinational Force
and Observers (MFO) in the dis-
puted Taba region.
El-Badawi said that "we have
come to start a new round of talks
on the implementation of the
April 25 (1982) agreement be-
tween the two governments. We
do believe that all problems can be
solved and overcome. We have
come here with an open mind and
shall apply that open mind to all
problems. I am looking forward to
the success of those talks, and I
hope our good will shall be recip-
rocated."
The 1982 agreement stipulated
that only Israeli police and border
police, without army troops,
should maintain security in Taba.

Troops of the Multinational Force
and Observeh (MFO), the inter-
national Sinai observation force,
were slated to have taken over re-
sponsibility for security pending a
settlement. But the MFO has
never entered the area, as Israel
and Egypt could not reach a com-
mon definition of "security" in
this, case.
Keddar said that during the
negotiations on Taba, he would
raise other issues, including the
search for the bodies of Israel De-
fense Force soldiers still not found
in the Sinai desert, and the con-
tinued sea searches for traces of
the IDF submarine Dakar which
disappeared at sea without a trace
some years ago on its delivery
journey from Britain.
While the talks were going on,
some 20 members of Tehiya and
Kach demonstrated outside the
hotel.

Duty Cutback
For Reserves

Tel Aviv (JTA) —, The Israel
Defense Force (IDF) will reduce
the active duty time for most re-
serve soldiers from 50 to 37 days a
year, beginning with the start of
the new fiscal year next April 1.
Reserve officers who command
units will be required to serve 42
days.
Deputy Chief of Staff Maj. Gen.
David Ivry, who announced the
change, said extended army serv-
ice put a severe strain on the na-
tional economy. In 1984, reser-
vists had been required to spend
60 days a year on active duty.

Say "YES" to Israel's Future on

THE WEEK OF GREEN SUNDAY
FEBRUARY 17-21

For over 80 years, the Jewish National Fund has
been saying "yes" to Israel's future. Through ex-
tensive afforestation, land reclamation, and break-
through agricultural research, the JNF has helped
ii bring new life to an ancient land.
Today, this nation-building work continues. But
vast stretches of barren terrain still remain to be
covered by a blanket of green.

On the week of GREEN SUNDAY — a JNF
volunteer will be calling to ask you to plant
trees in Israel for each member of your
family.

Say "YES" to the Greeningof Israel.
Plant trees in Israel on

Please! We need volunteers. Call us if you want to help make
phone calls on the week of Green Sunday. 557-6644.
