Israel, Soviet
Renewal Of Ties
Nixed By Kremlin

Jerusalem (JTA) — Israel pro-
posed to the Soviet Union that the
two countries resume cooperation
on the occasion of the 40th an-
niversary of the defeat of Nazi
Germany this year. But the idea
was flatly rejected by the USSR,
Premier Shimon Peres told a
meeting of high school students
Monday. The Soviets broke dip-
lomatic relations with Israel in
1967.
Peres said Israel's message was
conveyed to the Kremlin by Ar-
mand Hammer, the American oil
magnate who is well connected in
Moscow through his extensive
business dealings with the Rus-
sians. The reply was that a de-
velopment such as was suggested
by Israel would depend on rela-
tions between the Soviet Union
and the U.S.

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Given the
ratio of vehicles to highway miles,
Israel is the most heavily travel-
led country in the world, accord-
ing to Haim Corfu, the Minister of
Trasnport. There are 820,000 ve-
hicles in Israel and two out of
every 10 Israelis own a car, Corfu
said.
He said he was pleased to report
that road accidents declined by
five percent in the past year; in-
juries due to traffic accidents were
down by six percent and fatalities
by 10 percent. Corfu said that 43
percent of Israelis who apply for
drivers licenses fail to pass their
road tests.
