No Dachau Visit
For President

Washington (JTA) — The
White House has informed West
Germany that President Reagan
will not visit the site of the
Dachau concentration camp after
he attends the economic summit
in Bonn May 2-4.
White House spokesman Larry
Speakes, in confirming this last
week, said Reagan "doesn't think
it is the appropriate thing to do."
He would give no further explana-
tion.
However, Administration offi-
cials have been quoted as saying
that the President thinks that a
visit to Dachau "wouldn't con-
tribute to the theme of reconcilia-
tion and friendship" and that "the
Germans of today are not a part of
that and shouldn't be made to feel
that they are."
The West Germans reportedly
proposed the Dachau visit if Re-
agan stays on beyond the summit
for commemoration ceremonies
marking the 40th anniversary of
the Allied victory over Nazi Ger-
many May 8.

Israel Strikes
Fuel Deals With
Mexico, Colombia

Bogota (JTA) — Israeli Minis-
ter of Energy and Infrastructure,
Moshe Shahal, negotiated a series
of petroleum and coal contracts
with Colombia and Mexico early
last month, according to informed
sources in the Colombian capital.
Under the terms of the agree-
ment with Mexico, Israel will pur-
chase $800 million worth of petro-
leum annually, covering approx-
imately 40 percent of its consump-
tion. This makes Mexico Israel's
largest acknowledged oil
supplier, followed by Egypt.
Mexico, in turn, has agreed to
purchase $100 million worth of Is-
raeli industrial products yearly.
This represents a 20-fold increase
over Israel's best level of exports
to the oil-rich Central American
country, a traditional supporter.
The coal contract with Colom-
bia, a renewal of an existing ac-
cord, is for a total of $200 million
over a five-year period. In ex-
change, Colombia will buy a
variety of Israeli products valued
at $500 million over the five-year
span.
These contracts reflect the in-
creasing importance of bilateral
Israeli-Latin American trade re-
lations throughout the hemi-
sphere, the sources noted.
