Interim Force in Lebanon (UN-
IFIL) have offered to buy.
The engineers are also destroy-
ing the underground bunkers
built by the Palestine Liberation
Organization before 1982 when
the PLO was in virtual control of
south Lebanon.
Meanwhile, the Israeli and
Lebanese delegations held their
14th round of talks at Nakura last
week with no progress to report
and no date set for their next
meeting.
In a related development, five
Israeli soldiers were wounded in
south Lebanon Monday as attacks
on the Israel Defense Force and
the South Lebanon Army (SLA)
escalated sharply over the
weekend.
Two other attacks on the IDF
Monday caused neither casualties
nor damage.
Six terrorists were killed last
week in a clash with an IDF unit
south of the Awali River.
United Nations Undersecre-
tary General Brian Urquhart,
meanwhile, is trying to organize
an orderly take-over of the Sidon
area by UNIFIL troops to replace
the departing Israelis. He is ask-
ing France to deploy its UNIFIL
contingent to guard the Palesti-
nian refugee camps in Sidon.

Orthodox Role
In Federations
Urged By Rabbi

Spring Glen, N.Y. (JTA) — The
president of the Rabbinical Coun-
cil of America, Rabbi Louis Berns-
tein, called on Orthodox Jews
throughout the U.-S. to become
more involved in local federations
and the national United Jewish
Appeal.
Speaking at his organization's
mid-winter conference at the
Homewack Lodge, Bernstein told
the more than 200 rabbis from
throughout the nation, that they
and their congregants should be-
come more active in UJA and
local federations because the lat-
ter has become increasingly in-
volved in religious issues.
He cited the role of the UJA, the
Jewish Agency and the United Is-
rael Appeal in supporting Con-
servative and Reform movements
which fought the proposed Or-
thodox changes in the Law of Re-
turn.
Calling for active involvement
of Orthodox Jews in federations,
Bernstein said Orthodox Jews
must attempt to obtain more
funds for Jewish education.

Divorce Rate Up

Haifa — The incidence of di-
vorce in Israel is growing and has
reached the level of 1.3 divorces
per 1000 citizens, it was recently
revealed at a University of Haifa
symposium about divorce and
children by Nitza Ben-Dor, a lec-
turer at the university's Tel Hai
branch.
Ben-Dor's research shows this
level to be a threefold increase in
the number of single-parent
families in Israel. Today there are
12,000 such families in Israel.
