Negev — A miniature com-
puter, weighing only 200 grams,
acts as a "personal doctor" for
juvenile diabetics, instructing
them as to the exact quantity of
insulin they must self-inject
daily. Until now, the patients had
to regularly consult with their
doctor in order to ascertain the
amount of insulin to inject.
The computer was developed by
Dr. Yossi Tiran, of the Depart-
ment of Mechanical Engineering
and the Bioengineering Unit of
Ben-Gurion University of the
Negev, while on sabbatical at To-
ronto's Hospital for Children's
Biomedical Engineering Re-
search Division, headed by Dr. A.
M. Albisser. Clinical investiga-
tions were initiated in Canada
and are currently being conducted
in Beer-Sheva, under the guid-
ance of Doctors Esther Lieberman
and Shimon Weizman. Four such
microcomputers are presently in
operation at the Diabetics Clinic
at the Soroka Medical Center in
Beer-Sheva.
Individually programmed, the
computer is easy to use. The
patient performs a simple blood-
glucose test at home. He feeds the
estimated figure into the com-
puter and within seconds is told
how much insulin to inject. This
process is performed on the aver-
age of twice a day, before break-
fast and dinner. The computer
stores the blood glucose meas-
urements in its memory bank
each day, refers to the data and if
indicated, calculates changes in
deit, lifestyle, exercise or insulin
sensitivity. A special mechanism
within the computer warns the
patient a month before the bat-
tery needs to be changed, approx-
imately every two years.

Tel Aviv (ZINS) — The reorgan-
ization of personnel employed by
Israel's national airline has been
more or less completed. Neverthe-
less, El Al is still coping with some
severe problems, one of which is
the burden of a $300 million de-
ficit which has accumulated over
the years.
Servicing that debt alone costs
El Al $30 million annually, and
this does not reduce the principal
amount of the debt.
In its last budget year which
ended in March, El Al had an
operating deficit of $15 million.
Spokesmen for the airline say
that this loss is due to the fact that
the airline is not permitted to fly
on the Sabbath and on religious
holidays. They estimate that this
restriction results in the loss of at
least $15-20 million annually.
Were it not for these restraints,
the spokesman added, El Al could
operate in the black.
