THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS WOODWARD AVENUE DELI is name of new carry-out just south of 14 Mile Rd. that has set some sort of record . . . By "real skier' I mean the type who relishes cold weather, who can't wait for snow to fall so they can pack the car, drive for hours on icy roads and through blizzards in order to brave the cold all day long, sliding down hills with two boards strapped to their feet .. . They're a strange bunch and very difficult to buy presents for. Clothing worn at ski resorts can shock the non-skier . . . Very con- servative dressers in civilian life will turn up wearing red ski pants with yellow knee pads, huge ski boots with all sorts of buckles and knobs that climb to the top of their calf, and odd looking hats with tassles that normal people think are only suitable for small chil- dren or clowns. Still, if you want to tackle the task of buying a birthday, an- niversary or whatever gift for that ski bum friend or relative .. . there are many from which to choose . . . Be careful though .. . The hat you think is "so cute" may never make it to the slopes. In general, wines like a tempera- ture between 55 and 60 degrees . . . Five degrees, more or less, will not damage them . . . The main precaution is not to subject them to constant or abrupt changes in temperature . . . The storage prob- lem is usually simple for re- staurateurs and home owners who have cool cellars, but difficult for apartment dwellers who live in rooms kept at 70 degrees or higher . . . Better not attempt to store large amounts of wine if the temperature is not right. Store both natural and spark- ing wines on their sides so that liquid keeps cork wet . . . If the cork dries out, air seeps in and spoils natural oil- . . . or gas es- capes from champagne, which then turns "flat" . . . Fortified wines and liquors can be kept up- right . . . So can most California wines.
