HE'S A STORY all by himself
. . . people don't recognize him . .
and can't believe the stature Lou
Feldman has achieved . . . If you
can picture it, he has lost 322
pounds . . . and is down to a trim
160 ... on a diet developed by
himself . . . Imagine wearing size
34 pants after a very bulgy size 80.
On radio, his name is Lou
Michaels Feldman ... On televi-
sion, as host of Sportsview
America, the local gent is called
Lou Michaels.
If he doesn't write a book, I'll be
very much surprised.
GET WELL WISHES . . . to
Charlie Hoptman . . . at Henry
Ford Hospital.
JACK GELIEBTER is used to
rumors . . . Every so often
throughout his 40 years in busi-
ness as the Jack Gell & Co. owned
by he and wife Marianne, rumors
have the couple shaking their
heads in wonderment where they
got started.
As usual, the latest one is very
false . . . that Jack Gell & Co. is
going out of business . . . Other
rumors even had it filing Chapter
XI ... or their retiring . . . Fact is
very solid that Jack and
Marianne are very definitely
staying in business . . . as a viable
source for so many complete lines
. . . linens, textiles, room furnish-
ings, piece goods, yard goods, etc.
. . . over 250,000 varieties of mer-
chandise.
Their 200,000-square foot
warehouse on Federal Avenue in
Detroit has one of the most diver-
sified inventories around .. .
Could be that this rumor got
started when Jack closed his New
York office last April to concen-
trate strictly on operations from
the local warehouse.
Jack and Marianne are a suc-
cess story that has continuously
blossomed through the 40 years
. . . They were married in 1944 .. .
and Jack opened his business in
1945 with 300 square feet and just
one employee . . . Plus those
200,000 feet of growth, he now
employs 130 people.
VIKKI GILBERT, daughter of
Sedelle and Raymond Gilbert,
was recently recognized for excel-
lence in law at the Honors Convo-
cation Dinner given by Detroit
College of Law at Detroit Boat
Club . . . An honors graduate from
Michigan State University, Vikki
receives a cum laude degree on
Monday from Detroit College of
Law.
CONGRATS . . . to Terri Cas-
sels . . . on her birthday . . . to
David Light . . . on his birthday.
BRUCE STOEN, general
manager of Midway Motor Lodge
in Warren, is intrigued with
Laurie Moore, his singing house-
keeper . . . She sings at weddings,
parties and currently is appearing
in an east side nightclub.
At a recent party for Easter
Seal children, given by Stoen in
the Midway Symposium, Laurie
led the tots in song and was a
foot-stomping success.
Part-time and "to keep in
voice," Laurie sings at the night-
club during her off hours.
Other news at Midway includes
appointment of Art Bokatzian as
head chef at the Hoffman House,
located in the lodge . . . He for-
merly was sous chef at Golden
Mushroom . . . Jon Derge, for-
merly of the Minneapolis area, is
new manager of Hoffman House.
BEAUTY TIPS for gals . . . by
Tamara Friedman . . . "Eye, lip
and cheek colors don't have to
match what you're wearing but
they should coordinate a look.
Think about dressing your face
the same way you think about
dressing your body. Learn to look
at makeup colors as accessories
that pull a look together.
"Save colored mascara for the
evening, unless its navy. Dark
without being hard, navy can be
worn anytime. It's not so blue that
you end up with colored lashes,
but it makes the white of the eyes
look clearer. Navy's especially
wonderful for blue and green eyes,
but I would use it for brown eyes,
too."
LOOKING BACK ON col-
umns of yesteryear . . .
Sept. 19, 1952 . . . "Bernie
Burke, former Detroiter now
managing the Versailles Hotel in
Miami Beach, writes of the two
elderly ladies who checked into
the hotel . . . The first thing they
noticed was a little man circulat-
ing from guest to guest in the
lobby, whispering and collecting
money . . . They were told he was a
bookie — a man who took bets on
the horses . . . In,vacation aban-
don, they decided impulsively to
risk two dollars themselves .. .
They lost . . . That evening, the
two ladies were sitting comforta-
bly in the lobby when one of them
suddenly began to bite her finger
nails in apparent _despair and
sighed so that the other counseled
her, 'Becky, you shouldn't cry over
spilled milk. Stop worrying be-
cause you lost. It was only two dol-
lars' . . . 'It isn't the losing I'm
worrying about,' Becky answered.
`I was worrying abou,t if we had
won. What would we have done
with a horse?' "
May 10, 1968 . . . "Toni Phillips
is only 7 years old, but a very
enterprising young lady and al-
ready interested in giving a hand
to those less fortunate . . . Re-
cently she held a boutique of her
own after hearing about them
from her mother, Irene Phillips
and Aunt Florence Weingarden
. . . She sold comic books, crayons
and anything she could get her
hands on . . . Toni's big thrill tame
when she handed her aunt a purse
full of pennies and nickels in the
amount of $2.18 to be turned over
to the Northwest Child Rescue
Women for retarded children ..
Her mother and aunt are both
members of the group."
