Rehovot — Prof. Adi Shamir, a
well-known computer expert, has
been appointed the first incum-
bent of the Paul and Marlene
/- Borman Professional Chair in
Applied Mathematics at the
i Weizmann Institute. The chair
1 was established by Detroiters
›- Paul and Marlene Borman, their
friends and associates.
Prof. Shamir made interna-
tional headlines in 1982 when he
cracked the then supposedly un-
breakable Stanford computer cod-
ing system, meanwhile creating
—with two American colleagues
_ a still unbroken code of his own.
Also noteworthy are his achieve-
, ments both in desiging systems to
prevent software piracy and to in-
crease the versatility of digital op-
\-,
tical
discs.

Prof. Shamir is currently de-
signing a new computer image
processing and graphics labora-
\– tory which will play a major role
/– in the development of science-
based industry in Israel.
Born in Tel Aviv in 1952, Prof.
Shamir received his PhD degree
at the Weismann Institute in
1977. He then joined the faculty of
the Department of Mathematics
at the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology. In 1980, he returned
to the Weizmann Institute.

Israel, Mexico
Sign Agreement

Mexico City (JTA) — Mexico
will increase its supply of oil to
Israel in the near future, it was
announced here following a new
agreement that was signed be-
tween the two countries.
The signing took place during a
visit here last week by Moshe
Shahal, Israel's minister of
energy and infrastructure. The
agreement also deals with in-
creased trade and commerce be-
tween the two nations.

Israel Food Fair
Opens This Week

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Israel's
triennial food fair, which opens at
the Tel Aviv hotel this week, is
expected to draw more than 450
buyers of processed foods from 19
countries to sample the products
of Israel's food processing indus-
try. Israel's food exports rose by 17
percent last year.
