Orthodox Begin
Boycott Of
Bank Leumi

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Orthodox
Jews began a boycott Sunday of
the Bank Leumi, Israel's largest
bank. They are withdrawing their
deposits on orders from their rab-
bis because they claim a luxury
hotel, now under construction by
an affiliate of the bank, is located
atop an ancient cemetery near
Tiberias where Jewish sages were
buried centuries ago.
Police meanwhile, are inves-
tigating the latest of a series of
arson attacks on Bank Leumi
branches in Jerusalem. A fire
K_ early Jan. 17 did an estimated
$100,000 damage to the bank's
branch in the Ramot Eshkol
neighborhood.
Police are holding a suspect
)) from the ultra-Orthodox Mea
• Shearim quarter and although
thdY have not officially linked the
arson to the dispute over the hotel
construction site, they apparently
consider it the most likely motiva-
tion. The arsonist broke a window
in the bank at about 4:30 a.m.
local time and tossed in a burning
rag.
;-= An arson attempt was made
against a Bank Leumi branch on
Saladin Street in Jerusalem last
June 5. Late last month, the office
of the manager of the Mea
• Shearim branch was set on fire.
• According to the fire department,
the same arsonist was responsible
>– for all of the fires.
The initial complaints against
Bank Leumi came from the
Agudat Israel party last year
when construction of the hotel by
the Africa-Israel Investment
Corp., began. Officials of the bank
• and the Africa-Israel Corp.
i negotiated with the Agudat Israel
\ party and agreed to certain
• structural changes. But a com-
promise proved impossible be-
cause other religious factions
> convinced the Aguda politicians
that they had better demonstrate
) their zeal over the sanctity of the
site.

N

• Jewish Leaders
• Meet Weinberger
) On Israel Issues

New York (JTA) — A delega-
tion representing the Conference
of Presidents of Major American
Jewish Organizations, led by con-
ference chairman Kenneth Bial-
kin, met last week in Washington
with Defense Secretary Caspar
Weinberger and other Pentagon
officials to review "military coop-
eration and strategic matters" be-
tween the United States and Is-
rael.
Bialkin said that among the
various issues discussed with
Weinberger was the status of Is-
rael's request for additional U.S.
military aid. The conference
stressed their support for the in-
creased aid request, Bialkin said,
\-) adding that Weinberger said the
matter was still under considera-
tion by the Administration.
Bialkin said the delegation also
expressed its view that the trans-
fer of sophisticated military
weaponry to Arab states in the
region is a threat to the security of
Israel.
