Tel Aviv (JTA) — Given the
ratio of vehicles to highway miles,
Israel is the most heavily travel-
led country in the world, accord-
ing to Haim Corfu, the Minister of
Transport.
There are 820,000 vehicles in
Israel and two out of every 10 Is-
raelis owns a car, Corfu said at a
press conference reviewing his
ministry's work during the past
year. He said he was pleased to
report that road accidents de-
clined by five percent in the past
year; injuries due to trafic acci-
dents were down by six percent
and fatalities by 10 percent.
Corfu said that 43 percent of Is-
raelis who apply for drivers
licenses fail to pass their road
tests.
What with the proliferation of
motor vehicles and resulting traf-
fic jams, the government will de-
cide during the coming year
whether to go ahead with plans to
construct mass transit suburban
railroads in the densely populated
Haifa and Tel Aviv areas, Corfu
said.
He also promised that during
the next few months his ministry
plans the large scale introduction
of the "Denver shoe," a device that
locks the wheels of illegally
parked cars. The wheels are re-
leased after the motorist pays a
stiff parking fine.
Another innovation ahead is
the introduction of articulated
(flexible) buses, each with a
capacity for 120 passengers.

MSU Hillel
Has `Shabbaton'

The B'nai B'rith Hillel Jewish
Student Center at Michigan State
University will host a special
"Shabbaton" today and Saturday.
Rabbi Yitzhak Kagen will serve
as the Chasid-in-residence for the
event.
Meanwhile, the MSU HIllel's
"Wednesday Night at the Movies"
series continues this week with
Breaking Away. The film will be
shown 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at
the Hillel House, 402 Linden,
> East Lansing.
The MSU Hillel is offering classes
this term in Beginning Hebrew,
Intermediate Hebrew, Jewish
Holidays, Torah via Talmud and
Parshat Ha-Shavuah.
