Prior to 1984, the booklet had been favorably reviewed in var- ious newspapers and journals, and was widely distributed. In March 1984, the 11th edition of the booklet, entitled Your Rights 1984 included a new Chap- ter 14 under the heading "1984 — Was Orwell Right?" This chapter contained a discussion of the so- called "rewriting" of history, and included a restatement of the author's Holocaust denial acteristics, accessories, uses or benefits they do not have." Among the witnesses protest- ing the use of their names in the endorsements were the Attorney General of Australia; Senator Gareth Evans; Andrew McKay, the Melbourne Bureau chief of Rupert Murdoch's The Australian newspaper; and Yvonne Preston, the editor of the books page for the Sydney Sun-Herald. Each of them totally dissociated himself or herself from the con- tents of Chapter 14 which they de- scribed as "totally anathema," "totally abhorrent . . . a pernici- ous perversion of history" and "racist slander," respectively. Before final judgment, the re- spondents, including Bennett, agreed to consent to orders that they be enjoyed from distributing any copies of the booklet, unless all the words appearing on the back cover were obliterated. As a result of this order, the booklet was withdrawn from all news- stands and bookshops by the dis- tributors. Tel Aviv (JTA) — Vultures, the winged scavengers of desert regions, may be un-loved by most humans. But Yaacov Segal, keeper of the Tel Aviv University zoo, is not one of them. He is try- ing to arrange a love-match be- tween two of the creatures in the hope of reversing the near extinc- tion of a rare species, the lappet- faced vulture, a habitue of the Negev. The prospective mates are a 33-year-old vulture named Rosa and a nine-year-old male, both members of a breeding group at the univesity's Canadian Center for Ecological Zoology. The age difference apparently is no problem. But Segal's presence at the mating is essen- tial. He has cared for Rosa since she was brought to the zoo as a chick and she apparently regards him as her "mate." Rosa has laid eggs for Segal. But a male vulture is required to fertilize them. 4 The center's academic super- visor, Prof. Heinrich Men- delssohn, hopes that Segal and the male vulture will induce Rosa to produce a chick. If she does, it will be the first lappet-I: led vul- ture to be conceived am horn in captivity. The lappet is a strong p dator, with powerful curved sharp claws and nine-foot wi .gspan. Its name is derived from distinc- tive skin folds (lappet, . on its neck.
