magazines the lists of those
who have been unable for
years to . see their near and
dear ones? Is it really neces-
sary to ask you to collect drop
by drop the tears of all Jewish
mothers separated from their
children and place this vat in
front of the Soviet Embassy? It
is, of course, very nice and it
comes from the heart when
you speak of solidarity with
Soviet Jews. But when and
where and what political prob-
lem has ever been solved by
mere statement of solidarity?
This has not been an expres-
sion of base ingratitude or a
reproach against your
passivity, but a call for con-
crete action, since Russia has
always understood only con-
crete deeds and a practical ap-
proach. Let the experience of
Disraeli and Montefiore, of
Rothschild and Kissinger, be
of help to you. It is to you —
political, public and religious
leaders, businessmen, ban-
kers, doctors, teachers, scien-
tists, engineers and workers,
to you, the Jews of Europe and
America, to you who believe in
God and you who believe only
in yourselves — that we,
Soviet Jews, are appealing
now!
We appeal to all of you who
have not forgotten your an-
cient links with Abraham,
Isaac and Jacob, and to you
who have turned to national
nihilism: Jewishness is not a
club which one can leave. We
in the East and you in the
West have the same roots, no
matter how different are the
currents of the river. This
river of Jewish blood keeps
flowing_ The brotherhood of
Jewish martyrdom is eternal:
It is not "in the blood that
flows in the veins, but in the
blood that flows out of the
veins."
You — sons and daughters
of a nation which has suffered
the most terrible blows that
human madness can inflict —
take the truth of the Messiah
out of the sheaths of your souls
and beat it into the iron will of
deeds. Who, if not you, can
help us remove the stone from
the mouth of the well?
