12 Friday, January 25, 1985 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS BOOKS Mesorah gains high role in traditional publishing For nearly the entire era of the current century, several publish- ing projects dominated the Jewish field. With the Jewish Publication Society in the lead, importance must also be credited to Hebrew Publishing Co., Bloch Publishers, Behrman House and several of a minor nature. In the past few years, a new publishing house has entered the field and may be considered dominating the traditionally Or- thodox,' with emphasis on the halachic, including mishnaic and other commentaries and notewor- thy children's books. Mesorah Publications merits attention equal to the best in the field, and must be credited with performing impressively with its dedication to the devoutly tradi- tional. Both in hard cover and as a paperback, Mesorah most re- cently added to its fame with the publication of a well translated and commentated The Siddur Kol Yaakov. It already received acclaim in these columns. They merit the circulation they are be- ginning to attain. Among his mishnaic commen- taries issued by Mesorah is The Mishna: Seder Nashim, the first volume in a projected series, relat- ing women and the regulations ascribed to them, in Jewish lore. The first two volumes in a series that registers historic importance is the translation of the Tz'ena Ir'enah. It is the Teitsch Hum- mosh that inspired Jewish women at religious services. They are re- plete with legends, Talmudic tales, folkloristic approaches to inspirational Jewish values. They were the treasured for and by women. Then there are the biographi- cal. Another noteworthy biography ' describes the life of Rabbi Yosef Sonnenfeld, described as "The Guardian of Jerusalem." It was just published under the title, The Story of Reb Yosef Chaim, adapted by Rabbi Finkelman from the latter's earlier, lengthier work on this revered rabbi. Mesorah gained special recog- nition and appreciation for its series of books for young readers under the collective titles of The Best of Olomeimu. Another historically valuable work is the Book of Ezra, in the original and with a new transla- tion by Rabbi Yosef Rabinowitz. Ezra is a commentary an- thologized from talmudic, mid- rashic and rabbinic sources. Significant in the Mesorah achievements also is the publica- tion of a two-volume biography of the Chofetz Chaim. The Chofetz Chaim: the Life and Works of Rabbi Yisrael Mein Kagan of Radin by Rabbi Moses M. Yoshar, depicts dramatically the life and works of the great rabbinic leader who conferred with nobility and statesmen, who labored to attain just rights for Jewry in Russian Poland. The books were trans- lated into English by Charles Wengrov. Collectively, Mesorah earns more than recognition: it acquires merited acclaim for works that might never have survived, biog- raphies and stories that would have been ignored if not for this publishing group's devotional at- tainments. — P.S. The two month-long trial of a $50 million libel case brought by former Israeli Defense Minister Ariel Sharon against Time maga- zine moved to its finish as the jury last week decided on two of the three questions in the case in favor of Sharon. The case revolves around a key paragraph in a Time cover story on Sharon. The paragraph as- serted that Sharon, who was De- fense Minister at the time of the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon and the subsequent massacre of Palestinian refugees living in Be- irut refugees camps, discussed re- venge with the Lebanese Phalan- Please send the Manischewitz Passover Recipe Guide to: March of Dimes Name Address City One Recipe Guide Per Request. The Phalangists have been ac- cused of carrying out the mas- sacre. Sharon has denied that such a conversation with Phalan- gists took place. In order to prove libel, news re- ports stated, the jury must-rule in favor of Sharon on three ques- tiohs: that the paragraph was de- famatory, false, and published with reckless disregard for the truth. So far, the jury has decided the first two questions in favor of Sha- ron. The jury is in the process of deliberating on the third ques- tion, whether the article was pub- lished with "actual malice." After the second decision, Time Inc. issued a statement in which it said it "still believes that the arti- cle was substantially true." The statement said that "We continue to expect that the jury will find that Time did not libel Mr. Sha- ron."
