ROCHEN, 71, of Hollywood, Fla., died Jan. 14. Historian Allen Warsen, active in Jewish ranks As teacher and author of scores of essays, in an honored role as historian, Allen Warsen inscribed his name among the leading his- torians in this state and city and on a world scale. Scores of tributes to him said his passing left a deep void in the Metropolitan Detroit and Michi- gan cultural communities. Born in Poland, Mr. Warsen lived 53 years in the U.S. He died Jan. 11 at age 81. In the Jewish community, Mr. Warsen had a variety of roles. He directed the Adat Shalom Synagogue religious school for 18 years. He founded and was the first president of the Directors Council of the Jewish Religious Schools of Metropolitan Detroit. He helped establish a Jewish archives at the Burton Historical Collection of the Detroit Public Library. Mr. Warsen wrote Jewish Communal Institutions of Detroit and Autobiographical Episodes. He edited Michigan Jewish History, an official publi- cation of the Michigan Jewish Historical Society. He wrote more than 350 book reviews for The Jewish News. Mr. Warsen held bachelor of arts and master's degrees in social work from Wayne State Univer- sity. From 1954 to 1971, he was a history teacher at Cody High School in Detroit. He taught in the Detroit Schools for 33 years. Mr. Warsen leaves a daughter, Mrs. Lee (Annette) Friedman; and two grandchildren. New York (JTA) — Rabbi Maurice Perlzweig, a founder of the World Jewish Congress who served as the first chairman of the British Section and who headed the WJC delegation in 1945 to the founding conference of the United Nations in San Francisco, died Jan. 14 at age 89. Rabbi Perlzweig was born in Poland in 1895 and was educated in England where he received acclaim for his oratorical skills and his athletic abilities as a world-class runner at Cambridge. He was founder and chairman of the University Labor Federa- tion of Great Britain and president of the World Union of Jewish Students. After receiving his ordination he officiated at the Liberal synagogue in London. During the critical war years, Perlzweig was appointed director of the WJC International Affairs Department in New York. In the post-war years he repre- sented the WJC at the economic and social council of the UN, drafting many documents sub- mitted to the Commission of Human Rights.
