THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Partners Friday, January 18, 1985 RABBI MILTON ARM Congregation Beth Achim RABBI CHAIM BERGSTEIN Bais Chabad of Farmington Hills RABBI PHILIP BLACHORSKY Congregation B'nai Israel Bound together by our faith and heritage, the Jewish People has forged an unbreakable partnership. Certainly, at no time in our history has that partnership been put to greater challenge. Once again, after a decade of flickering hope for those who seek to live as Jews, darkness has descended once again upon our brothers and sisters in the Soviet Union. For daring to study Hebrew, they risk their jobs, their security. Sometimes more. In Israel, defense requirements have contributed to a grave economic situation. And the price is being paid by those who can least afford it: the elderly, immigrant families, young people whose hopes of a better future are at risk because the government must cut back its higher education budget. And here at home people are still without work, their families suffering from the emotional stress that goes with joblessness. For them, and the growing number of aged living in poverty, there has been no turnaround. ongregational Rabbis For them, and for our fellow Jews everywhere, we must dedicate ourselves and our resources. We, the congregational rabbis of Detroit, hereby reaffirm: It is the obligation and privilege of every congregation to cooperate in every possible way with the Jewish Welfare Federation in its 1985 Allied Jewish Campaign, which will help meet the needs of Jews in Israel, in Detroit and throughout the world. We do further reaffirm that it is the privilege and obligation of every Jewish man and woman to give as generously as possible to the Allied Jewish Campaign, which serves to support the network of agencies here in Detroit for every family to utilize as they are needed. We therefore designate Friday evening, January 25*, and Saturday, January 26*, as Campaign - Federation Sabbath, as a reminder that we are united—in our peoplehood and in our support of the 1985 Allied Jewish Campaign. Further, we urge every member of our community to answer the call on Super Sunday-LJanuary 27 — and to Be There for our fellow Jews.
