Ali Jennifer Blau, daughter of
Dr. and Mrs. Irving Blau, will
share her bat mitzvah with a
Soviet Jewish girl in absentia at
Temple Israel on Saturday.
Tamar Matveyev, the youngest
of seven children, is the daughter
of Divora and Yakov Matveyev.
Matveyev is a farmer living in the
"Jewish" village of Posiolok
Ilyinka in Central Soviet Russia.
After he applied for a visa in
1975, he was put in jail for some
time. The Matveyevs' passports
were withdrawn and travel was
impossible for them. In 1980,
authorities accused Mrs. Mat-
veyev of being incapable of rear-
ing and educating her children in
the proper way and threatened to
take her children away from her.
After the first few letters Ali
wrote to Tamar were unanswered,
the Blaus then decided to ask a
friend who knows Russian to
write a letter for them. About a
month later Ali received a very
friendly brief letter from her twin
in Russia. A second letter has
been sent.
Ali also honored her twin on
Sept. 23, 1984, by planting a tree
in the Soviet Jewry Freedom
Grove at the Jewish Community
Center.

Fla., celebrated his bar mitzvah
on Dec. 25 at Cong. Beth Emet in
Florida. Rabbi Sherwin Wine of
the Birmngham Temple of-
ficiated.
Marc attends the Cong. Beth
Emet religious school and is a
member of the Association of
Jewish Humanist Youth'. He
attends Safety Harbor Junior
High School where he is in the
seventh grade.
Marc is an honor student and a
member of the American Model-
ers Association. He participates
in a local TV show by writing and
acting.
