Desserts were also included and you could order graham butter- scotch or fresh rhubarb pie, choco- late marshmallow cake, frozen puff with chocolate sauce or a strawberry parfait. Coffee, tea or milk and hot raised biscuits were part of the meal. A bottle of Bur- gundy, Claret, Rhine or Sautern wine set customers back a whop- ping $1.35. It was cheaper by the glass — 30 cents. "There was no cover charge for early dinner guests who left be- fore 8 p.m. For others, there was a 50-cent cover Sunday through Friday and 75 cents on Saturdays and holidays. But there was a $1 dance admission charge during the week and $1.25 Saturdays, holidays and Sundays from 6 to midnight. "I found a 1940's simulated wood menu, shaped like a T from the restaurant name, Tip's, which featured thick steaks from 95 cents to $1.10 and thin pancakes for 20 cents to a quarter. The 25- cent pancakes included eggs and four different meats. I don't re- member where this place was. But it was interesting to read the bot- tom of the menu which said, "All items listed are at or below our ceiling prices according to Office of Price Administration regula- tion." "Do you sometimes wonder why a restaurant changes hands three or four times before it succeeds? Hugo's on Northwestern and Twelve Mile didn't last long. Hugo was a gracious host who greeted the ladies with the old- world charm of kissing their hands, sang in baritone Thursday opera nights and did the cooking in his spare time. "When Hugo left, Jim Brunetti took over, redecorated the restau- rant from stem to stern and spe- cialized in Italian sea food. But Brunetti's also folded. Maybe Hugo and Brunetti could't hack it because of conflicts with owners and investors, all professional men, not restaurateurs. Needless to say, present owner Pat Archer is making it big with his Ex- calibur, which opened after Brunetti made his exit." THE SCENE is a Paris street corner . . . A shady-looking char- acter approaches a New York tourist and after glancing in all directions to see that he's safe, nudges the tourist . . . "Ameri- cain?" . . . "Yeah" . . . "Tourist?" . . .
