raise funds." The couple has
been contacted by members of
Hadassah and other Detroit
Jewish organizations. Les-
sanework's wife, Felli, owns
the Blue Nile Ethiopian Res-
taurant on Woodward Ave-
nue. He manages a Dearborn
reataurant for a large Detroit
chain.
Lessanework said he has
had no further word from his
family in Ethiopia, and he has
made no effort to contact them
since a telephone conversation
with his mother a few months
ago. He said communications
difficulties "and the fear of
hearing bad news" has kept
him from trying to get through
to his family in Addis Ababa.
He also has family living in
Jerusalem.
The Israeli government last
week, in the wake of the dis-
closure of "Operation Moses"
to bring Ethiopian Jews to Is-
rael, announced that it will
spend $25 million to purchase
600 apartments for new im-
migrants from Ethiopia.
Health Minister Mordechai
Gur, meanwhile, ordered the
medical 'profession to curb
what he called "loose talk"
about the health problems of
the Ethiopian newcomers
which has alarmed many Is-
raelis.
Gur warned doctors and
nurses that disciplinary
measures would be taken for
public remarks that might
spread panic among the
populace and urged the public
to remain calm.
Such demands developed
when news of the airlift of
Ethiopian Jews first broke and
doctors, nurses and social
workers were quoted in the
media about the poor state of
their health.
Meanwhile, Ethiopia's
Marxist government has fi-
nally agreed to accept direct
aid from Israel to help to alle-
viate famine. Arye Harel,
president of Magen David
Adom, said that despite severe
economic difficulties, the
MDA, Israel's equivalent of
the Red Cross, has raised
$250,000 for Ethiopian relief.
The Ethiopian regime has
no diplomatic relations with
Israel, a country to which it is
hostile, and stubbornly re-
fused to accept any assistance
from Israel until now. It re-
versed its position at the prod-
ding of the International Red
Cross and the Ethiopian Red
Cross Society.
Harel said the 220 tons of
relief items which have been
awaiting shipment for several
weeks include 10 field kitch-
ens, 800 tents, 20 tons of flour,
20 tons of sugar, cooking oil,
chocolate powder and baby
food.
They will fill 10 marine Con-
tainers which the Zim Lines,
Israel's national shipping
company, will carry. Ethio-
pian authorities refused to
allow the relief supplies to be
flown in by Israeli aircraft.
