Lack of Yiddish at
Holocaust Center

On my first visit to the
Holocaust Memorial Center, I was
immediately overcome by a feel-
ing of new pride. Everything,
every scene and every view has
been produced so vividly and so
esthetically, with appropriately
descriptive inscriptions accom-
panying each one. However, at
the same time a discrepancy
strikes me — a feeling of dis-
crimination on the part of the in-
itiators of the Holocaust Memo-
rial Center against the Yiddish
language.
Are they really unaware of the
fact that the last words uttered by
our loved ones were in Yiddish?
Should not the Yiddish language
have been the holy language in a
place like this with which to de-
clare our expressions of piety and
respect for our Martyrs?
The Holocaust Memorial _Cen-
ter is abudantly provided with all
the modern electronic wonders,
which expose so vividly and
dramatically our tragic past.
There is even a video camera
which interprets and explains ev-
erything in French. Yes, in
French! But not in Yiddish.
I mention this, not because I
have anything against the Memo-
rial Center. On the contrary. I
supported the idea of establishing
such a monument from the first
moment it was conceived. Even
now I maintain that-we can be
proud of this accomplishment of
memorializing unto eternity our
Martyrdom. The entire Detroit
Jewish community must support
' it. But it could, and should have
been different. This is what hurts.
The above lines are words coming
from the heart.

A thank you to
transportation unit

It's never too late to say thank
you!
Since 1895, when the Maccabi
World Union sponsored the first
"Jewish Olympics" in Berlin,
young Jewish athletes from
around the world have joined to-
gether in the spirit of healthy
competition. This past year, the
Detroit Jewish Community Cen-
ter had the honor of hosting the
Maccabi Games. One of the rea-
sons the games went so well was
the United Hebrew Schools-
Jewish Welfare Federation
Transportation Department.
Under the direction of Isadore
J. Goldstein, the department op-
erates a fleet of 51 buses, eight
vans, two utility vehicles and one
tow truck. Its smooth effective-
ness proved invaluable to the
Maccabi games, ensuring that the
Games came off with clockwork
precision.

athletes meant late hours for the
