Judith Naftaly
Detroit area women will be
asked to open their hearts to Jews
in need — at home, overseas and
in Israel— when a Jewish Welfare
Federation Women's Division
volunteer calls during Phonogift
to ask for a pledge to the 1985
Allied Jewish Campaign.
Phonogift, the Women's Di-
vision annual telephone appeal on
behalf of the Campaign, begins at
United Hebrew Schools on Jan. 20
and will continue on Jan. 21, 22
and 27. Under the direction of
chairman Judith Naftaly and
associate chairman Bev Leuchter,
300 volunteers will be at the
phones to reach over 5,000 women
in the metropolitan area.
The undertaking will take
place during the Jan. 20-27 Cam-
paign Super Week, which in-
cludes the community-wide open-
ing concert with Theodore Bikel
Jan. 23 at Adat Shalom Syna-
gogue; Campaign-Federation
Sabbath Jan. 25-26 at Detroit
synagogues; and the traditional
Super Sunday telethon Jan. 27.
According to Sharon Hart,
Women's Division Campaign
chairman, four Phonogift day di-
rectors — Linda Garfield, Evelyn
Levine, Jeanette Solway and
Reva Talon — were appoined this
year to coordinate each day's ac-
tivities, from recruiting workers
to serving meals. Volunteers will
work a 2 1/2-hour shift, she said,
taking turns at the phones to ex-
plain the needs of the Campaign
and spread the message of its 60
local and overseas beneficiaries.
Donna Slatkin and Barbara
Eisenberg are Phonogift briefing
chairmen; Kim Dickstein and
Julie Gurwin are clerical chair-
men; and Susan Marwil, Malka
Gordon and Evelyn Silverman are
special handling chairmen.
