Brothers take
music awards
Brothers Robert and Andrew
Adelson, sons of Dr. Irwin and
Joyce Adelson of Franklin, were
the top winners of the recent Mac-
cabees Mutual Life Insurance Co.
"Quest for Excellence" competi-
tion.
Robert, 17, a clarinetist, re-
ceived the first prize of a $5,000
scholarship. His brother, Andrew,
15, won the $2,000 third prize
scholarship.
Robert is a senior at Cranbrook
School, where his brother is a
junior.
In addition to his cash prize,
Robert will have the opportunity
to perform with the Detroit Sym-
phony Civic Orchestra.
He has studied clarinet for
seven years. For two consecutive
years he won the Jonathan P.
Cohen Memorial Scholarship for
summer at Interlochen Music
Camp, where he was principal
clarinet with the World Youth
Symphony Orchestra.
With plans to become affiliated
with an orchestra, Robert has
been a principal clarinetist with
the Michigan and Livonia youth
symphonies and attended
Tanglewood's young artist pro-
gram in Massachusetts.
Andrew has studied oboe for
seven years. He has performed
with the Livonia Youth Sym-
phony, the World Youth Sym-
phony at Interlochen, the Inter-
lochen All-State Orchestra and
the Cranbrook School orchestra
and band. He is currently princi-
pal oboe with the Detroit Sym-
phony Civic Orchestra.
Teens compete
in Maccabiah
tennis tryouts
Nicole Rival, 15, of Bloomfield
Hills, and Debbie Schlussel, 15, of
Southfield, were in Philadelphia
this week to compete in the
United States Maccabiah Tennis
Team Finals at the University of
Pennsylvania.
Both were semi-finalists of the
midwestern regional Maccabiali
qualifying :tennis tournament,
one of 13 qualifier tournaments
held across the country.
The Maccabiah, or "Jewish
Olympics," is held in Israel every
