"I WANT MY restaurant to
live. It's a landmark of fine din-
ing."
With these words, Frank
Passalacqua, owner of Mario's on
Second Blvd. between Willis and
Canfield in the Wayne State Uni-
versity campus area, continues to
do a remarkable job of satisfying
patrons.
The outside English Tudor
architecture . . . red awning and
stately Mario's name on the build-
ing continues to beckon people for
an adventuresome journey into
the land of delightful cuisine and-
excellent presentation.
From the moment a polite gent-
leman takes your car to park in
Mario's. private lot, there's a treat
awaiting, within the confines of
this noted restaurant which
opened its doors in 1948 by origi-
nal owner Mario Lelli . . . Frank
took over Oct. 16, 1981 . . . put up
fine paintings on the bare walls
. . . plus a fireplace, among other
things . . . But the basic oak wood
decor still remains . . . as does its
quiet, simple elegance.
When Frank bought Mario's
Restaurant, it wasn't with any
thoughts of making changes .. .
This has always been a highly
successul presenter of fine Italian
cuisine . . . and to serve anything
different would have been shame-
ful . . . If anything, Frank and his
staff have made Mario's a better
place to dine . . . This is a strong
statement considering Mario Lel-
li's unfaltering reputation that
listed it among Detroit's top ten.
People come from far and wide
to enjoy superb Italian dining .. .
Many show-business celebrities
with access to great restaurants of
the world make Mario's a "must"
whenever they come to Detroit .. .
or nearby . . . Lou Rawls, Johnny
Desmond, Sammy Davis, Jr., Al
Martino, Harry Guardino, Wayne
Newton, Donald O'Connor, Phil
Foster, Henry Mancini and
others.
During the World Series,
Alabama's lieutenant governor
ate at Mario's . . . and made Frank
an honorary member of his staff
. . . attested by a framed confirma-
tion . . . He was just one of so many
out-of-towners who have been
back time and again to Mario's . . .
Detroit Tigers members are reg-
ular Mario's attendees . . . as are
athletes from other local profes-
sional teams . . . plus those corn-
ing here to compete.
Leo Spavale, a waiter at Mario's
since 1950, is now the maitre d'
. . . and a very personable one at
that . . . expounding his worlds of
knowledge to make certain every
customer receives the attention of
a celebrity . . . Leo is back on the
job . . . after a kidney stone opera-
tion.
We've been to Mario's a number
of times . . . always for something
different to eat . . . and have yet to
be disappointed . . . We are cer-
tainly not alone in this last cate-
gory.
Always such a pleasure to see
people we know and like . . . Aid
Kushner . . . Mamie and Jason
Tickton . . . and others at Mario's.
There are no recipe secrets at
Mario's . . . In fact, five are on the
back of its menu . . . or your waiter
will gladly write down what you

had ... and how it was prepared.
Our waiter was a dandy . . .
Mark Pautuk, polite, efficient and
personable.
He prepared Shrimps Scampi
tableside . . . in light flour, galic,
parsley and lemon butter . . . then
on his rolling cart, deftly readied
crab legs and avocado slices .. .
with house dressing of garlic and
olive oil.
The crispy and chilled salad
tossed by Mark was wonderful .. .
Kentucky bib lettuce, hard-boiled
egg, tomato wedges, chickpeas,
artichokes and tiny pieces of
marinated roasted beef.
Minestrone soup, full bodied
with tender noodles and fresh
vegetables, was delicious . . .
without the slightest tinge of to-
mato essence . . . Veal Siciliano
was superb . . . very lightly
breaded and tenderly seasoned
with garlic . . . This is a great
entree at Mario's . . . Then Mark K
topped off his lavish tableside
cooking with desserts of Straw-
berries Romanoff and Bananas
Tropicale . . . made with French
Brandy, Triple Sec, Creme de Al-
mond, Orange Curacao, brown
sugar and Rum Shortbreads . . .
plus, of course, the sliced straw- (
berries and bananas.
Mario's is not for the skimpy
eater . . . When dining at this
highly-regarded establishment,
come prepared to have a good,
wholesome meal . . . because
Frank and his staff do not believe
in skimping on portions . . . how-
ever expensive the cost may be.
We were there on a Sunday
evening . . . (Mario's is open seven
days a week) . . . A female pianist
delightfully played background
music . . . On other evenings,
strains of gypsy violins waft
through the room in romantic ca-
dence.
Sid and Marilyn Frumkin had
just gotten their new Chrysler
New Yorker . . . and the evening N
had started out with a lie . . . That
Chrysler robot of Sid's kept say-
ing, "A door is ajar" . . . Everybody
knows it's not . . . A door is a door
. . . but rest of the evening was
truthfully another very fine Ita-
lian dining experience at Mario's
. . . where, without drinks or tip, a
couple can graciously dine for
under $25.
NO MORE two-for-one drinks
in Michigan middle of January
. . . Legislature approved change
on request of state's Licensed
Beverage Association represent-
ing about a third of Michigan's
bar owners . . . The group said
two-for-one happy hours contrib-
ute to drunk driving . . . Massa-
chusetts had earlier become the
first state to ban happy hours and
many types of alcoholic promo-
tions.
MUCH MERRIMENT and
frivolity at so many places this 1
past New Year's Eve . . . but those
who had an opportunity to attend
activities at Standard Club North
and didn't, missed out on what the
members say was one of the best
shindigs given at the Northwest-
ern Hwy. private club.
Some of the folks couldn't re-
member when Standard Club]
North was so packed (140) for;
such a lengthy period of time .
and at 3 a.m. people like Ted Can-
