THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 2 NEWS 'Aik- _ ' tf• Israel hospitals' closing averted L Tel Aviv (JTA) — The Treasury came up with money this week to avert the shutdown of govern- ment hospitals throughout the country which have been unable to pay their bills. The hospitals, denied further credit by suppliers, are now able to restock their fuel supplies and vital medical and other items which had dwindled to the danger point. The funds were forthcoming only after a series of meetings be- tween Premier Shimon Peres and Health Minister Mordechai Gur, • who stressed the urgency of the situation and the need to ensure uninterrupted hospital services. Peres called Finance Minister Yitzhak Modai to insist that the necessary funds be made avail- able immediately. Meanwhile, the outlook for workers in the Haifa area is grim. The giant Ata textile combine, the largest single employer there, won a one-month reprieve from bankruptcy just before the new year when the district court post- poned its Dec. 31 shut-down order until Feb. 3. But there may be no breathing spell for most of the 600 em- ployees of the Haifa Shipyards. They face immediate dismissal because the defense ministry has canceled orders for two large land- ing craft for the navy, citing budget cuts. The shipyards were hit earlier by cancellations from local com- mercial shipowners. Only two tugs for the government ports authority remain in its order books and these will require only a small workforce. The Zim Container Lines ships are being "stretched." They are cut in half and new midsections added to increase capacity — but when that job is completed the yard will be left with repair and maintenance work which will re- quire no more than 200 workers. Meanwhile, a number of cur- rent JSO board members received scholarships to attend various student conclaves last semester. They are: Diane Epstein, JSO vice president, who attended the Na- tional Jewish Student Political Leadership Seminar in Israel; Board Chairman Elliott Rosen- baum, Publicity Chairman Daniel Feldman and Membership Chairman Connie Burke, who attended the North American Jewish Students Network Con- vention in Montreal; and Dror Maor, who was a delegate to the Hillel Eastern Winter Institute at Yale University in New Haven, Conn.
