Path cleared
for Barbie trial

Paris (JTA) — Judge Christian
Riss, the investigating magis-
trate compiling evidence to try
Nazi war criminal Klaus Barbie,
completed his file and passed it on
to the public prosecutor's office
which will decide what formal
charges will be brought against
Barbie and when his trial will be-
gin.
According to court sources, the
trial could be held before the end
of this year. The sources said Riss
dropped five of eight possible
charges against Barbie because of
insufficient evidence or because
they are covered by the statute of
limitations.
The three charges retained and
passed on to the public prosecutor
concern the 1943 deportation to
death camps of 90 members of the
Union of French Jews in Lyons
where Barbie was Gestapo chief;
the deportation of 650 people
whom he forced to board the last
train to leave Lyons for the death
camps before the end of the war;
and the deportation of 52 Jewish
children and two teachers from a
children's home in the town Izieu.
Riss' investigation took 33
months to complete. He inter-
viewed hundreds of witnesses
during that time. Barbie, 71, has
been confined to the same prison
in Lyons where he and his hen-
chmen once interrogated and tor-
tured their victims. He has been
there since February 1983.
Barbie, who had lived in Bolivia
for 30 years under the alias Klaus
Altmann, was expelled from that
country in January 1983 and
handed over to French
authorities. He was imprisoned
for crimes against humanity.

Immigrants
killed in crash

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Four new
immigrants from Ethiopia were
among six people killed in the
first major road accident of 1985.
Two people were killed and seven
were seriously injured in six other
road accidents during the first 24
hours of the new year.
The total for the day was eight
fatalities and 20 injuries. The
number of fatalities was in-
creased to nine by the death of an
Arab boy injured in a road acci-
dent last week.
The rash of highway carnage
was an ironic counterpoint to
Transport Minister Haim Corfu's
upbeat announcement of New
Year's Eve that that had been a
five percent drop in road accidents
in 1984, a 10 percent. decline in
road fatalities and a six percent
drop in injuries from road acci-
dents.
The Ethiopian Jews, a new im-
migrant from Argentina, and a
sixth person were killed when a
truck carrying workers from new
immigrant centers in the
Beersheba area to Sderot ran off
the road. As the driver tried to get
back on the pavement, his vehicle
overturned and skidded on its side
into the opposite lane where it
was hit by an army bus. Three of
the bus passengers were slightly
injured.
