HANNAH SCHLOSS

Old Timers' recent annual
Chanukah Party at the 10 Mile
Jewish Community Center was
actually a triple celebration .. .
Members Tillie and Harry Madi-
son celebrated their 60th an-
niversary . . . while members
Goldie and Harry Abrams feted
anniversary number 61.
AFTER OVER 45 years in the
children's clothing business, Leo
Berlin retiring in very near future
. . . He began working in his
father's Hamtramck store at age
13 . . . In business for himself on
Six Mile near Livernois next to
Leonard's Shoes, Leo served
mayors, Motown celebrities and
Detroiters for 25 years . . . Past 12
years, his Orchard Mall store
serviced third and fourth genera-
tions . . . It was common for people
to come over in a restaurant and
say, "Hello, Mr. Berlin, you used
to dress me when I was a child."
IF YOU'RE ONE OF those
many folks who love the music
and artists of yesteryears., keep
your radio tuned to CKLW, 800
AM on the dial . . . It's simply
eat with fellows like Dave Pr-
nce, Marc Avery and others play-

when amateur photographer Ar-

. . . "It has a maximum aperture of
F/2, automatically aims and fo-
cuses in half-a-second and auto-
matically adjusts aperture in
even less time," he says. "The
color film on which it records is
stereoscopic and self-renewing
after every exposure. The de-
velopment time is a fraction of a
second" . . . Expensive? . . . It's
priceless . . . it's the human eye.

LOOKING BACK on Columns

of Yesteryears .. .

Jan. 7, 1966 ... "The voice on
the phone last week told Irving
Chaiken that he had dialed the
wrong number . . . When Irving
said, 'I did?', stranger on the other
end replied quickly, 'Have I ever
lied to you before?' "
Jan. 21, 1966 ... "For the first
three months • of her marriage to
Bennett Adelman, Joyce contin-
ued working with a utility corn-
pany . . . On Joyce's first morning
at home after resigning her job,
she set right out to make some-
thing of her new housewife title
. . . An engraved nameplate,
which had been on her desk for
years at the office, now sits
authoritatively on the kitchen
stove."
Feb. 18, 1968 . "On discover-
ing that she was an avid square
dancer, fellow campers during her
recent tour to Switzerland asked
Alice Gold to teach them . . . She
managed to get some records
mailed from the States, and
amidst explanations that women
don't usually call dances, she
started teaching . . . An afternoon
later, Swiss, German, Greek,
British, Scandinavian and
American campers were all doing
well and Alice was so hoarse she
couldn't talk . . . 'This is one of the
most interesting camps I've ever
been to,' Alice heard one of the
Swiss campers excitedly tell a vis-
itor. 'We even have an American
call girl here.' "
April 26, 1968 . . . "Asked how
he liked his new baby sister, little
Howard Gross, now living in Tuc-
son, Ariz. with mom and dad,
Aaron and Ruth Gross, replied,
`It's nice, but I wish it was a boy,
`cause then I could play marbles,
baseball and other games with
her' . . . His little question-asking
friend said, 'Well, then why don't
you exchange her for a brother?'
. . . 'Can't,' was Howard's answer.
`It's too late now. We've used her
four days.' "
