LUGGAGE
Bonn (JTA) — Neo-Nazi leader
Karl-Heinz Hoffmann gained an
advantage at his murder trial in
Nuremberg this week when wit-
nesses, former members of his
neo-Nazi organization, failed to
repeat in court incriminating tes-
timony they had given earlier to
police investigators.
Hoffmann is charged with the
December 1980 murder of Jewish
publisher Shlomo Levin and a
woman companion. His motive,
according to the prosecution, was
to demonstrate to the Palestine
Liberation Organization that he
was worthy of additional help for
them. The PLO had trained some
of Hoffmann's gang at terrorist
camps in Lebanon.
For proof, the prosecution relied
heavily on statements made to
police by former members of the
Werkesportsgruppe Hoffmann, a
neo-Nazi organization that mas-
queraded as a sports club until it
was outlawed several years ago.
But the witnesses declined to
repeat their statements in full. It
is believed that Hoffmann
threatened to expose their own il-
legal activities if they testified
against him. Hoffmann has
pleaded not guilty to the murder
of Levin. He has confessed to sev-
eral minor offenses including il-
legal possession of arms.
Population up
Tel Aviv (JTA) — The popula-
tion of Israel stood at 4,235,000 at
the end 1984, of which 3.5 million
are Jews, according to estimates
published Monday by the Central
Bureau of Statistics.
The Jewish population in-
creased by 82,000 during the past
year, a 1.9 percent rise. The non-
Jewish population rose by 20,000,
a 2.8 percent increase. The figures
do not include the West Bank and
Gaza Strip.
The bureau reported that Is-
rael's Jewish population has in-
creased by some 500,000 during
the last five years.
