MDA

may halt
blood supply

Tel Aviv (JTA) — The Mage
Davod Adom said Monday that i
would halt the supply of blood to
hospitals and the army this week
unless the government and local
authorities pay more than $1 mil-
lion in overdue bills.
Amitzur Kfir, head of the MDA,
Israel's equivalent of the Red
Cross, said his agency has been
unable to meet its payroll. Most of
the money is owed by the Health
Ministry. The Finance Ministry isI
said to be deliberately withhold-
ing funds to pressure the Health
Ministry to cut its budget.
Kfir said that public health
would not be in immediate danger
if the MDA stopped delivering
blood because hospitals have
emergency supplies.
