Claire and I.A. Bernstein will re-
ceive the State of Israel's Award of
Honor at the.1985 Israel Bond
Tribute Luncheon scheduled for
12:30 p.m. Jan. 20.
The event, sponsored by the
Ann Arbor Committee for State of
Israel Bonds, will be held at Beth
Israel Congregation, 2000
Washtenaw. Luncheon co-
chairmen are Rabbi Allan
Kensky and Rae Lampe. Guest
speaker will be Dr. Berl Frymer,
former national executive direc-
tor of Farband - Labor Zionist
Organization of America and a
noted author and lecturer.
The Bernsteins will be pre-

Bernstein, a native of West
Virginia, earned his A.B. degree
in biology at John Hopkins and
his Ph.D. degree in biochemistry
at Case-Western Reserve Univer-
sity, where he served as a re-
search associate and senior in-
structor in the department of bi-
ology.
Coming to the University of
Michigan in 1953, his profes-
sional appointments have in-
cluded that of research associate,
associate proessor and professor
in the school of public health's de-
partment of industrial health; in-
structor, assistant professor,
associate professor and professor
of biological chemistry in the
medical school's department of
dermatology; and research asso-
ciate at the Institute of Industrial
Health and the Institute of
Environmental and Industrial
Health.
His current posisitions at U-M
include that of professor and di-
rector of the toxicology program
in the department of
environmental and industrial
health; professor in the depart-
ment of biological chemistry; and
associate director for research,
the Institute of Environmental
and Industrial Health.
Dr. Bernstein has held more
than 20 consulting positions, is a
member of 17 professional
societies, is the author of 168
journal articles, abstracts and re-
views, is the editor of four books,
and has served or chaired over 50
professional or administrative
committees and boards. He has
shared his expertise during pro-
fessional visits to Osaka Univer-
sity in Japan, the Rockefeller
University in New York and the
Hebrew University in Israel. He
is the recipient of Taube Interna-
tional Memorial Award, the
Stephen Rothman Memorial
Award and the U-M Distin-
guished Faculty Achievement
AWard.
Dr. Bernstein served in the U.S.
Army during World War II, with
active service in the North Pacific
Theatre.
Communally, Dr. Bernstein
has served as a member and then
chairman of the Ann Arbor Rec-
reation Department Advisory
Board and chaired the Ann Arbor it
Civic Center Committee. He
