PASSOVER-1985

NEWS

PRESENTS

Montreal (JTA) — Israel's
Sephardic chief Rabbi, Mordechai
Eliyahu, ended his official two-
week visit to Canada several days
ago at a reception given in his
honor by the Canadian Jewish
Congress (CJC) at its headquar-
ters in Montreal.
He met with Mayor Jean
Drapeau of Montreal, before de-
parting for Israel, and with Minis-
ter of Culture Pierre Marc
Johnson of the Quebec govern-
ment who welcomed him to
Quebec City with the words,
"Baruch Haba."
The main event of the chief
Rabbi's visit was the inaugura-
tion of the Sephardic rabbinical
center, Maghen David. There are
some 20,000 Sephardic Jews in
Canada, the majority of them in
Montreal.
Eliyahu is the supreme
authority on religious matters for
Sephardic Jews all over the world.
It was expected that his visit
would help mend differences be-
tween the Sephardic rabbinate in
Montreal and the more modern
elements of the Sephardic Jewish
community.
At his reception, Bernard
Finestone, chairman of the east-
ern region of the CJC, spoke of the
identity of views between the
Sephardic and Ashkenazic Jews
in Canada, Eliyahu spoke of the
powerful unity of the Jewish
people wherever they are — in the
Soviet Union, Syria, Israel or the
Diaspora. He expressed hope that
young Canadian Jews would im-
migrate to Israel.
