THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

Letter

Continued from Page 4

thesis does not declare war on
private property and
capitalism. It takes a search-
ing look at Biblical precepts
anchored in social justice.
From that wellspring, it draws
the conclusion that this some-
times brisk, sometimes
endangered economy of the
United States must serve
people rather than demanding
that the advertising-titilated,
perplexed consumer be forever
slave to the economy.
In a sense, the Catholic
document reminds us that
housing and acreage are really
not the landlord's but the
Lord's. These tangibles must
serve the common weal, the
whole community, a part of
which grdws increasingly des-
perate and — hard hit by infla-
tion and unemployment —
poverty-stricken.
Advancing brave proposals
whose time has not only come
but should be heeded, the
Catholic blueprint hoists
Washington's trickle-down,
supply-side nonsense into the
circular file where it belongs
and calls for new priorities,
new compassion,. a new com-
pact for management, labor,
the people who train the minds
and the people who care for
souls.
Are the caring churchmen
who issue this challenge
bleeding hearts, as some will
charge? Well, with the mess
we're in, it's time to thaw out
so many frozen hearts.

The Negev, Israel 's arid desert in the south, can turn into a major source of
veoetables and fruit exports, not only for Europe, but for United States as
well.
This success story is possible by the Israeli invention of drip
irrigation which allows the use of brackish waters available in the Negev.
The hot desert sun is a blessing for growing crops in winter.
Israeli farmers
in the Negev grow twice as much cotton per acre as American farmers in Arizona.
In Georgia farmers grow 1,120 kilos of peanuts per acre, while in the Negev

the yield is 2,600 kilos per acre.

Israel sets the best example of how to change a wasteland to life-supporting
land. Today there are 189 agricultural settlements in the Negev desert.

El Al nixes
Romania flights

Tel Aviv (JTA) — El Al an-
nounced last week that it has sus-
pended its weekly flights to
Romania until the Romanian
authorities explain why
passenger boarding procedures at
Bucharest airport, in effect for
years, were suddenly changed last
month.
The old procedures were
promptly restored after El Al can-
celled a flight but no explanation
has been forthcoming. There was
no indication why El Al insists on
an explanation, or what pro-
cedural changes were involved. A
company spokesman, Nachman
Kleinman, refused to give details.
Israel's national airline has
maintained once-a-week service
between Tel Aviv and Bucharest.
The Romanian airline, Tarom,
flies to Israel twice weekly. For
the time being, El Al passengers
for Romania are being landed at
Vienna where they change to an-
other airline for the flight to
Bucharest.
